125 Years: Our Quasquicentennial

In 1891, forward-thinking leaders in the Washington-Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church decided to establish a school on a five-acre plot of pasture land on the north slope of Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill. They called it Seattle Seminary. Read more about SPU's 125th anniversary.

Student Employment

Your student can search for current job openings on SPULink. You may think working during college will hurt your student’s GPA, but studies show students who work a part-time job perform better academically. SPU is close to the heart of the city, so students can choose from a wide variety of on- and off-campus jobs. Your student can check out the Office of Student Employment site for more information about the types of employment available, or email ose@spu.edu with questions.

Should your student study abroad?

Students can earn credits towards their degree spending a quarter, a semester, or even a full year abroad. A study abroad quarter in Italy, France, South Africa, Guatemala, the Philippines, China, or many other locations can help your student fulfill SPU’s foreign language requirement, add a minor, or even graduate early. Planning ahead is key, so encourage your student to come talk to us early!

Bible

Lectio: Jeremiah study begins September 26

Discover a complicated and richly textured picture of God’s relationship to the prophet Jeremiah and the people of God through a new Lectio series. Stephen Fowl, 2014−15 visiting scholar at SPU and professor of theology at Loyola University Maryland, leads SPU’s guided Bible reading program for Autumn Quarter 2016. His examination of the book of Jeremiah offers new ways to think about and address God in prayer to carry believers through times as challenging as Jeremiah’s.

Michaela Hope

Student spotlight: Michaela Hope

At the SPU Job Fair, freshman Michaela Hope had handed out every copy of her résumé but one. Then she found herself at a booth for the UW’s Oncology and Radiation Research Lab, and thought, “I don’t have any chance of getting this position, but … what the heck?” Soon she had a job learning about what goes on behind the scenes in health care, and making a wider net of connections than she had anticipated. Watch a video about Michaela.

Dean’s List honors academic accomplishments

Quarterly honors are awarded to those undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students in good standing who have completed at least 12 credit hours at Seattle Pacific and attained a 3.5 or higher grade-point average in a given quarter. Check the dean’s list site to see whether your student gained academic honors the last academic year.

From the Center for Career and Calling

If finding a job is in your student’s future, here’s some advice:

Encourage your student not to wait until he or she desperately needs a job to start preparing marketing materials. If your student hasn’t written a professional résumé before, or the last version is outdated, encourage your student to check out the resources and samples on the Center for Career and Calling website, or get step-by-step instructions by watching the “How to Create a Résumé” webinar.

Once the résumé is polished, your student can use it to build a LinkedIn profile. Encourage your student to watch this to get started: LinkedIn for Students: Your Career Starts Here.

For more assistance or editing advice on résumés and LinkedIn profiles, your student can call to schedule an appointment with a career counselor (Monday through Friday, 8 am. to 5 p.m.); we’re here all summer.

You want your student to be successful at SPU, and so do we! Our mission is to equip students with a deep understanding of themselves and their calling in order to launch meaningful careers. How can you help your student on his or her vocational journey?
