125 Ones to Watch

As Seattle Pacific University celebrates its 125th anniversary, we reflect on the past and look forward to the future. For more than a century, SPU has graduated individuals who have carried out our mission to engage the culture and change the world. Our 125 Ones to Watch list consists of notable GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) alumni. These individuals demonstrate remarkable leadership and success in their professions — ranging from founding their own businesses to working in the arts to ministry.

We were delighted to recognize our 125 Ones to Watch during Grand Reunion weekend October 7–8, 2016. Throughout the University’s 125th anniversary year, we’ll continue to celebrate these Falcons and the impact they have on their communities. As we look ahead to the next 25 years, we’ll be watching to see how these 125 — and all our future students and alumni — flourish in their endeavors.

We invite you to celebrate with us throughout the year! Stay tuned for more 125 Ones to Watch stories in the next issue of Response. You can also view a complete list of our 125 Ones to Watch and check out SPU anniversary activities at spu.edu/125.

125,000-hour Service Challenge

You only turn 125 once, which is why the entire SPU community is commemorating our historic commitment to helping others by volunteering in all types of service throughout the year. As part of our 125th anniversary celebration, SPU has set the goal of 125,000 hours of community service during the 2016–17 academic year. We invite you to join students, faculty, staff, and alumni in volunteering, and to watch for good things happening all around. Learn more about 125,000 hours of service.

Encourage Your Student This Christmas Season

The joys of holiday preparation are upon us, and with them comes this invitation to participate in a special Christmas tradition at SPU — preparing and delivering Christmas care packages to students living on campus prior to finals week in December. Each residential student will receive a care package that includes goodies such as granola bars, fruit, hot cocoa mix, tea, popcorn, and other snacks or quick breakfasts to help him or her get through the first finals week of the year.

To get started, submit a personal note of encouragement to your student through the Christmas Care Package Message Center. The University will attach your message to your student’s care package and deliver it just before finals week. This year we anticipate the cost of each care package to be $4 dollars. You can make a $4 dollar donation online through SPU's secure payment portal. Please know that every residential student will receive a care package regardless of whether the student’s parent/guardian donates. If you are able to donate over $4, your additional donation will help cover the cost of care packages for students whose families are unable to donate. Any excess funds will go to subsidize future student events.

Deadline is Wednesday, November 23.

A “Best National University”

Seattle Pacific is the only private university in the Pacific Northwest to make the 2017 U.S. News & World Report’s Best National Universities list. SPU joins the University of Washington and Washington State University as one of only three institutions from Washington state named to the magazine’s list. U.S. News defines national universities as institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs, and that are committed to producing groundbreaking research.

Earlier Option to Submit Your FAFSA

The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is used to determine how much a family is expected to contribute to the cost of attending college. FAFSA results are used in determining student grants, work study, and loan amounts. To receive the best possible financial aid offer, submit your FAFSA online as soon as possible after October 1 of each year you will attend SPU. For assistance, email sfs-info@spu.edu.

SPU Payment Plan Is Online

The Plan C: Single Quarter Monthly payment plan application is available to all students online through their Banner Information System account, once they have registered for their 2017 Winter Quarter courses. The payment plan divides a student's quarterly charges into three equal installments for the quarter. The application deadline is Friday, December 2. Read more about payment options and methods.

Mom’s Day Recap

This year Mom’s Day — hosted by the Office of Alumni and Parents Relations — took place November 5. Despite a rainy Pacific Northwest day, moms and their students enjoyed fun-filled experiences both on campus and across the greater Seattle area. Mom’s Day began with SPU moms coming together for reflection and prayer during the morning parent prayer meeting and was followed by a Hawaiian-themed lunch with their students, pictures with SPU’s mascot Talon, shopping at sigmaRHO’s Mistletoe Market, bingo, and a live music performance by 2010 SPU alumnus Evan Egerer — who recently opened Grand Reunion’s David Crowder concert. Another successful Mom’s Day is in the books, and we thank all the moms who traveled from near and far for this special day.

From the Center for Career and Calling

In an effort to find new ways to assist your student with vocational exploration and job search, the CCC is excited to launch a NEW series of events called Mega Meet-ups. A cross between a career fair and a networking event, these are targeted recruiting events where your student can learn about relevant jobs, industries, and companies, and connect with employers in a more casual environment.

The Autumn Quarter Mega Meet-up on November 9 focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Winter Quarter’s Meet-up will focus on business and government, and Spring’s on peace, justice, and human services. This is a great opportunity for your student to practice networking and explore careers with employers and alumni from a variety of successful companies.
