How to do SPU spirit nails: Hallie’s top 5 nail art tips

From fireworks to palm trees, snowmen to the Seattle Seahawks, Hallie's nail art Instagram is full of detailed and creative designs. We asked the SPU psychology major for tips on how to create her SPU spirit nails: maroon and white designs that feature the SPU torch.

Hallie takes you step by step in the process in this video tutorial.

What Hallie used:

  • OPI Natural Nail Base Coat
  • Essie “Bahama Mama” (maroon)
  • China Glaze “White on White”
  • Seche Vite Quick Dry Top Coat
  • New8Beauty nail art brushes
  • Nail striping tape
  • Acetone (nail polish remover)
  • Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (for moisturizing)

Top 5 useful nail tips:

  1. To prevent flimsy and peeling nails, avoid putting water on naked nails, meaning always have at least a clear base coat on to protect your nails
  2. Use cuticle cream or oil to strengthen nails
  3. Use glass nail file to get a precise shape and less damaging file (smaller grit than sand paper)
  4. Use a quick dry top coat to speed up the nail drying process (if you don’t own quick dry top coat, put your nails in cold water for a minute to harden)
  5. Instead of a Q-Tip, use a small paint brush and acetone for precise and clean polish clean up around the edges/cuticles
