With a background in global development studies, Krueger currently lives in Indonesia, teaching English at a high school and working as a cultural ambassador, engaged with her community. She leads an English club after school, tutoring the other teachers in English, spending time with her neighbors and learning Bahasa Indonesia from them.
How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?
SPU was very helpful in getting me to Indonesia on a Fulbright grant. Staff edited and revised my application and oversaw the entire application process. As a student, I was connected by SPU to amazing organizations for work study and internships, providing me a chance to get involved with a refugee community in White Center for after-school tutoring, and giving me the opportunity to study abroad in Guatemala and learn among brilliant professors and focused students.
Who made a difference in your SPU education?
Dr. Kathleen Braden, Owen Sallee, and Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil all made tremendous impacts on my life at SPU. As my supervisor during my time of student leadership with Urban Involvement, Owen helped me develop the way I practice community engagement and intentional living. As my faculty advisor, Dr. Braden spent many hours pouring into my life, including travelling to Guatemala for a study abroad program. Dr. Braden embodies everything I want to be as a human. She is devoted to God, she puts her whole heart into the people she works with, she is a brilliant, kind, humble, conscientious woman dedicated to making the kingdom of God present on earth.
What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?
Stay connected; networking is such a valuable tool for hearing about new opportunities and relationships. Even though the first job after college may not be amazing, keep your focus on your real passions. Use whatever you end up doing to keep developing yourself professionally. The right job will turn up after time!
