This course offers a sociological examination of sport as a pivotal social institution, highlighting its historical significance and ongoing cultural impact. Students will critically explore the structural and cultural dynamics surrounding sport and investigate its relationship to various social problems and identities. Informed by sociological theories, they will learn how social, political, and economic forces shape behavior in athletic contexts. The course will also analyze how beliefs about gender, race, and class, impact opportunities within sport. Key modules include Power & Ideology; Interaction Ritual Chains; Class & Race; Violence & Winning; etc. May be repeated for credit 1 time.
