Undergraduate Instructions

Students at Ivy Cutting

There are important steps you must take before you graduate (further instructions provided below):

  • Apply to graduate in Banner by January 15, 2022
  • Register for Commencement
  • Request your guest e-tickets
  • Order your regalia
  • Pick up your regalia
  • Close out your Falcon Card account

You must register online for Commencement. If you have applied to graduate in Banner, instructions for Commencement registration through the Marching Order portal will be sent to your SPU email address. Registration on Marching Order must be completed by May 15.

Registration through the Marching Order portal is how you will request tickets for the Commencement ceremony, as tickets are required for entrance into the Tacoma Dome. E-tickets will be available in the Marching Order portal. Any changes to ticket requests must be made by May 15.

On the day of the ceremony, tickets can be scanned off of smart devices, or guests can bring ticket print-outs.

Likewise, you will receive up to four electronic Ivy Cutting rain plan tickets, in case we need to move Ivy Cutting indoors. Please note that, due to venue size restrictions, it is still first-come, first-served for guest entrance, until capacity is reached. If we need to move to a rain plan, graduating students will not need a ticket for themselves.

If you have any issues or questions associated with registration or tickets for Commencement, please contact Student Academic Services at 206-281-2031 or sasinfo@spu.edu.

You must order your regalia (cap, gown, and tassel) by Monday, March 7. See the cap and gown page for more information.

If your regalia order is placed by March 7, your regalia will be ready to pick up at Grad Fest on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13. If you do not purchase your regalia by March 7, you will be able to purchase it at the SPU Bookstore at a higher price point. See the cap and gown page for more information.

You must have a $0.00 Falcon Fund balance on your Falcon Card Account when you graduate. There are a few ways to achieve this. If you have Falcon Funds, you can start by spending down your balance on campus. All retail locations on campus take split payments to help you spend even your last pennies in Falcon Funds. If you cannot spend down your balance, you will need to complete the Falcon Fund Refund Request Form online. This form allows you to request a refund of your remaining balance or gift your remaining balance to SPU. A paper copy of the form will also be available for you to complete at Grad Fest, and Campus Card Services will reach out with a link to the form the week before Commencement - so keep your eye on your SPU email address. Contact campuscards@spu.edu with any questions.

Saturday, June 11, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.,  Tiffany Loop

Graduates, please arrive promptly at 2:45 p.m. to line up. Meet on the south side of the Fifth Avenue streetscape (between Marston and Weter).

Wear your cap and gown (with tassel on the right side) and any special cords or stoles you’ve been awarded. The processional will begin moving down to Tiffany Loop at 2:55 p.m.

Remember that this is an outdoor ceremony, so please adjust your clothing and footwear accordingly.

If you have any accessibility needs (i.e. cannot manage stairs), please contact graduationinfo@spu.edu, so we can assist with accommodations.

Tickets are not required for guests, unless there is a rain plan.

Sunday, June 12, 2 – 4:30 p.m., Tacoma Dome, 2727 East D Street, Tacoma, WA 98421

Please arrive at the Tacoma Dome by 1 p.m. (doors open at 12:30 p.m.) (student check-in location will be located in the Exhibition Hall, near the northwest entrance of the Dome). Graduating students do not need a ticket to enter, but must bring their SPU-issued student ID to show at the door.

Your guests will enter the building separately through either the NW or SW entrance. Students MUST present their SPU ID to enter the Tacoma Dome.

Proceed immediately to the area assigned to your school to check in and pick up your name card.

Faculty marshals will assist you in lining up for the processional onto the floor. The processional will begin at 2 p.m. sharp. The platform party will march first, followed by the faculty, and then students.

Keep your place in line, keep track of your name card, and be sure to sit in your assigned row. You must stay with your school.

Meeting Family Members/Guests: After the Commencement ceremony, your family members and guests should plan to meet you in front of the Tacoma Dome. Family members and guests will not be allowed on the arena floor.
