How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?

It is imperative to feel a sense of purpose in my work, both internally and externally. SPU instilled that sense of purpose within me, and The Seattle Times provides me with that opportunity. My day-to-day efforts contribute to company successes, and through journalism and beyond, those successes directly and positively affect the community I live in — engaging the culture and changing the world.

Who made a difference in your SPU education?

Numerous SPU faculty and staff members made a difference in my education and experience, however the exploration and growth I experienced in Debbie Pope‘s courses truly helped me discover who I am, and how I view and react to my world and the world around me. With her support, I learned to become comfortable being the first one to speak up and I learned not to wait for someone to give me permission to lead or share my voice.

What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?

Think big. Imagine the life you want and go full stream ahead. Don’t wait for permission to pursue it and don’t wait until you are “ready.” You are ready for whatever life brings you and ready to chase whatever you want out of life.
