As the hardware design engineer at, and president of, Orfos LLC, Clyde combined his two lifelong passions: cycling and lighting. Through his own company, Clyde says he has been able to enhance the safety of cyclists, hikers, and outdoor adventurers of all kinds on a global scale. He believes that if people feel safer out on the road and in the wild, they will likely have more active, healthier lives.
How does your time at SPU connect to the work you’re doing today?
At SPU, we are taught not only the fundamentals of how to engineer something, but also to always ask the question when beginning something new, “Should this be engineered?” Engineering is a huge social responsibility and everything we make affects the world around us. SPU has taught me that faith and careers really were meant to go hand in hand, and that has largely impacted my focus of designing products that affect lives in a positive way.
Who made a difference in your SPU education?
My electronics professor, Don Peter, was instrumental in helping instill my enthusiasm for hardware design. His classes helped me realize that, not only could electronics be fun and rewarding, but their potential was also endless.
What advice do you have for students about life after graduation?
Actively tailor your career to make a difference in the world. Your skills are too valuable to be wasted on meaningless tasks that you don’t believe in.
