Moral
Education: Themes in Language and Literature
Literature
at its best embodies in characters and actions the perennial
questions: What is the Good Life? and How ought I to live it?
that lie at the heart of what it means to be a human. Every
generation frames the questions for themselves and looks to
answer the questions in its own way. When we read good literature
we enlist the imagination to come to the aid of reason in our
search for the answers to these questions.
Moral
Education in Teaching and Learning
This
course is designed to assist both teachers and learners in understanding
some of the moral implications involved in teaching and learning.
Questions about the moral context of learning and teaching are
explored. In addition, an overview of specific ethical structures
of cultural relativism, egoism, and utilitarianism are provided.
Finally, the course focuses on character education. Providing education
to enhance the specific virtues of respect and responsibility are
also discussed as an example of character education.

Education: Themes in Morality and the World of Work
When
students complete their school work, they typically look for employment.
The idea is that secondary
school, institute, or university prepares us for the world of work. This
is true to a certain extent. In school, we learn knowledge, skills, and
values that we
can apply throughout life. But no matter how good our schooling is, there
is
always more to learn. In a rapidly changing world, learning how to learn
may be the most important skill of all.
A few years ago, a study titled “The Assessment of American Education” was
conducted. Among the issues considered in this study was the question of what
qualities employers think are the most important in prospective workers. In other
words, if you were seeking employment at a particular business, what skills do
you need in order to succeed? The findings of the study are interesting. They
show that employers are looking for seven capabilities. In this module we will
examine each of those capabilities.
