| It’s Spring Zing Time: Enjoy a
Relaxing Getaway in Sunny Arizona! SUN-DRENCHED MOUNTAINS and valleys, lofty plateaus, narrow canyons and awesome stretches of desert make Arizona one of the most popular vacation destinations in the country. It also makes it a “must do” for alumni and friends of Seattle Pacific University who enjoy converging on the Phoenix/Scottsdale area each March for Spring Zing. What could be better than leaving behind the sometimes soggy surroundings of the Pacific Northwest for three days of fun, including golf with SPU President Philip Eaton, delicious Southwest cuisine and a Seattle Mariners Spring Training game? The special feature of this year’s Zing, March 11–14, is a very special banquet hosted by President and Mrs. Eaton at Fairway House, Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale. Eaton will speak to attendees about “Crafting a Vision to Change the World.” As Seattle Pacific is poised to achieve even greater influence and impact in the world, Eaton says he is eager to introduce SPU’s emerging 10-year plan, “A Blueprint for Excellence,” and to hear from Spring Zing participants about their views of the unfolding vision. Golf at Grayhawk promises an experience that is both enjoyable and challenging. The championship Talon Course was selected one of Golf Magazine’s “Top 10 You Can Play.” The other course SPU golfers will enjoy is The Raptor, named for those ferocious dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” The 11,000-seat Peoria Stadium again plays host to the Mariners for a slugfest with the Colorado Rockies on March 13. Spring Zingers will be able to catch a season preview of the 2004 Mariner lineup. One enthusiast who has yet to miss a Spring Zing is White River School District Superintendent Jay Hambly ’72. He calls it a great informal getaway that couldn’t come at a better time of year. “Spring Zing is a nice, laidback event — and well-organized,” he adds. While he personally likes to golf, Hambly says the Spring Zing program has expanded to include a variety of activities that appeal to different tastes. This year’s Zing includes a Sunday morning worship service, dinner at El Paso Barbecue and a PING tour at Karsten Manufacturing. For the non-golfers, a simultaneous tour to a historical site is planned. Spring Zing also allows time for the latest news from SPU. One year, Hambly was a member of Eaton’s golf foursome and appreciated the leisurely opportunity to visit with the president. “It’s a neat way to go,” says the superintendent. “I look forward to it every year.” For more information, visit www.spu.edu/ springzing or call the Alumni Center at 206/281-ALUM.
