Most of the pieces in the exhibit were in the more traditional media of painting and sculpture, but Kayo Nakamura submitted a video. Here, to the tune of Barry Manilow’s “I Made It Through the Rain,” a fluffy white bear (Kayo herself), floats across a lake as the sun comes out from behind opening clouds. This piece added a dimension of movement and sound to the exhibition, and also a welcome bit of lightheartedness. With the Manilow and the plush bear, there is a kind of cheerful irony, as if to say, “everything is
all right now — and anyway, it wasn’t such a big deal in the first place.” Kayo seems to ask if maybe we don’t take some of our hardships a little too seriously.
