Crew Novice Four Wins at Dad Vail; Track Captures Third Conference Title
FINISHING STRONG, the Falcon rowing and track and field teams collected championship trophies well into the month of May, and individuals from those teams were still receiving honors as the season changed to summer.
Women's crew, after claiming national titles in the varsity four category each of the past two years, won its third and fourth national championships within a span of just a couple hours on May 11 in Philadelphia. Both the varsity pair and the novice four completed undefeated seasons at the Dad Vail Regatta. The Seattle Pacific University novice boat — made up of stroke Sarah Zorn, Shannon Buehler, Heidi Visser, bow Andi Martineau and coxswain Emily Thomas — finished first for the 12th straight race with a comfortable margin over second-place Georgia. In addition, the women's lightweight four brought home a bronze medal.
Seven members of the women's crew, including four members of the varsity light four, earned national scholar-athlete awards from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. While the novices are all expected back, varsity pair Kimberly Tschetter and Trisha Sawatsky graduated this spring.
In track and field, SPU won its third consecutive women's conference championship, although by a much closer margin than years past, and it went on to place 19th in the NCAA Championships in San Angelo, Texas. Senior Stephanie Huffman, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Athlete of the Year, won three events at the conference meet and took second place in the national javelin and third in the heptathlon.
Huffman joined senior shot putter Dionna Anderson and sophomore pole vaulter Ally Studer as All-Americans. Nathanael Castle, winner of both the GNAC 800- and 1500-meter races, became the Falcons' first male All-American in four years.
Chris Randolph, Colorado state runner-up in the boys high jump, and Julie Reese, the state 1A shot and discus champion, have signed letters of intent to compete for SPU next year.
