The SPU community is invited to a Good Friday service at First Free Methodist Church on April 3, 12:30-1:30 p.m. The service is titled “Good Friday in a World of Violence,” and includes worship through song and prayer, and meditation on the significance of Jesus’ suffering and death for our world today. Bo Lim, University chaplain, and Carlene Brown, associate professor of music, will lead worship, accompanied by others from the SPU community.

A message from Provost Jeff Van Duzer: “As many of you know, one of the four campuswide initiatives that we have launched this year is the Global Initiative. School of Business, Government, and Economics faculty member Ross Stewart has been giving leadership to this project, and a copy of the original charter for the work of this task force can be viewed through the Provost Gateway.

The original design of the initiative called for an extensive assessment phase to determine where our university stood on all things international. This work has now been completed, and I am very pleased to send you the Global Initiative Task Force’s assessment report for your consideration. The task force will now turn its focus to the next phase of its work, with the hope of developing a plan that will cut across all of the units in the Office of the Provost over the next year. I am very grateful to the members of this task force for their continued good work on this very important initiative.

The Center for Applied Learning presents its annual Social Venture Plan Competition showcase on Thursday, April 16, 2-6 p.m., in Upper Gwinn Commons. This competition is designed to encourage SPU students from all majors to develop entrepreneurial projects that can make a difference, locally and globally. Faculty and staff are invited to attend. Everyone who votes for a People’s Choice winner will be entered in a raffle for dozens of door prizes, including Amazon gift cards and MiiR water bottles.

The John Perkins Center will co-host audience discussions following productions of Taproot Theatre’s Best of Enemies. The play is based on the true story of racially segregated schools in the 1970s in Durham, North Carolina. When a Ku Klux Klan member and a civil rights activist are forced to work together to solve the problem, they learn about humanity and the surprising gifts that come with change.

Have you seen them? New SPU billboards are standing proud all over the Seattle area, and new bus advertisements are zooming up and down Seattle and Eastside streets. This campaign is intended to motivate a prospective student to decide to enroll at SPU and to enhance engagement and connection with our regional alumni. If you see one, take a picture and post it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and be sure to include #isawSPU. Each week for the next several weeks, one lucky photographer will win a free Seattle Pacific license plate frame or water bottle. At the end of the contest, one of those weekly winners will also win the grand prize: two tickets for a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel on the waterfront. Be ready! Those buses move fast. The former head of the National Security Agency, retired four-star Army Gen. Keith Alexander, comes to campus as part of SPU’s annual Downtown Business Breakfast. He will give a free evening lecture on Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.

The School of Psychology, Family, and Community is hosting a special event on Saturday, April 11, for those interested in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This event will feature a Community Resource Fair, lectures from leading experts in the field of a ASD, and a panel discussion of older adolescents and young adults with ASD.

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at SPU’s Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are June 15-September 28, 2015. Summer requests are based on years of service to SPU and past summer stays at Casey. Employees are ranked by their years of service as verified by Human Resources. Once the ranking is developed, the summer stay history is cross checked. If you have stayed at Casey during the summer, your ranking is replaced with the years it has been since your stay at Casey. Professor of Physics Stamatis Vokos was named an “Outstanding Referee” for 2015 by the American Physical Society. He was one of 142 referees chosen for being “exceptionally helpful in assessing manuscripts for publication in the Physical Review journals.” The selection was made from 30 years of records on more than 65,000 referees who have been called upon to review manuscripts, including more then 37,800 that were submitted in 2014. Congratulations, Stamatis!

An article titled “Seeing Leaders Takes Guts” by Rob McKenna, chair of the Department of Industrial-Organizational Psychology, appeared in Light and Life magazine in February. Rob is the leader of the Develop Leaders Strategy Team for the Free Methodist Church General Conference in Orlando this summer. The article highlights the notion that leaders go first and bear a burden that others do not have to bear. They do courageous things in the face of tremendous opposition, get some credit when things go well, and take the blame when they don’t. At the same time, leaders are editable and willing to have the backspace key pushed on their decisions. They are aware of their strengths and areas that need further refining, are willing to consider personal sacrifices for those in need around them, and are convicted and clear. Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies Robert Baah gave a presentation at the Christians on Diversity in the Academy Conference in Claremont, California, March 25-26. The conference theme was “Diversity: A Mosaic for Global Renewal,” and his presentation was titled “Rewriting the Biblical Psalms: Ernesto Cardenal and the Ethics of Imprecation.” 

Professor of Art Roger Feldman gave a presentation at the Transformation Conference held in February at Bethany Community Church. The conference was co-sponsored by Fuller Theological Seminary Northwest. Roger’s presentation was titled “Imperative Risk.” Learn more about the conference.

From University Archivist Adrienne Meier. “One hundred years ago, advertisements for Seattle Pacific appeared not on billboard or buses, but in periodicals. This 1915 ad for the school shows that the institution did not yet have the 3307 3rd Avenue West address, and the ad copy had not yet caught up to the Board of Trustees’ decision to rename the school Seattle Pacific College. But one hundred years later, we are still a “Protestant Co-Educational School” that offers “good courses,” although those terms probably won’t show up in any of our current advertising!” Select the link to see the advertisement.
