The Faculty/Staff Bulletin is the weekly, internal e-newsletter for SPU faculty and staff. All faculty and staff receive the Bulletin, and most items are submitted by its readers. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information to fsb-editor@spu.edu or by selecting “Submit News” at the bottom of the Bulletin.

The Bulletin is published on Mondays, and the deadline to submit information is the preceding Thursday. Submissions may be edited for clarity. The editor is Tracy Norlen, director of public information in University Communications. The Bulletin is divided into several sections.

Campus News & Events highlights the major news and events on campus. Only events related to SPU will be accepted. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information, including department news, campus events, or guest speakers on campus. Digital photos and graphics are especially welcome. When possible, event information will be published two weeks prior to the event. Remember to plan ahead when submitting information.

Faculty & Staff News is for professional information related to your position at SPU or in higher education. Items of interest are conferences attended, books or articles written or published, presentations made, awards received, or research completed. We especially would like more professional news from staff.

Library Connections, written by library staff members, highlights different resources available to faculty and staff to help in research and teaching. This feature appears the first week of the month in the Bulletin, but is not published during the summer months.

From the Archives is a monthly feature showcasing photographs and stories from the SPU archives provided by University Archivist Adrienne Meier. The feature is published the last week of each month during the academic year, and is not published during the summer months.

This Month in the Garden is a monthly feature written by SPU Campus Master Gardener Jeff Daley, highlighting some of the plants, flowers, trees, and landscaping on campus. This feature contains photos taken by Jeff and a description of the plants. This feature is not published during the summer months.

SPU in the News lists most of the print or broadcast media appearances by faculty and staff. If you've been used as a resource for a reporter, let us know by submitting the information to the Bulletin.

Milestones is for personal news of interest to the SPU community, including births, adoptions, marriages, anniversaries, church services, mission trips, awards, and athletic accomplishments. Digital photos are always welcome. This section is also used for memorial service information.

Please join me at a meet-and-greet reception on Tuesday, October 10, 3–4:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and hear a vision for the work of diversity at SPU in the year ahead. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend. The event begins with informal networking and refreshments. A brief program with remarks from President Martin and myself will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by an opportunity for us to meet.

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Project Cool’s drive for school supplies for homeless students ages 14-18. Project Cool is one of SPU’s previous CityQuest partners, and has supported more than 30,000 homeless students since its founding 28 years ago. This will be a great moment to restock Project Cool’s supplies as they provide backpacks, school supplies, and basic health items to hundreds of homeless children and teens.

A message from Falcon Athletics: The Falcons invite all faculty and staff to join us for another exciting year of SPU athletics. Faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children up to a maximum of four) to all regular-season home events in Brougham Pavilion and home soccer games at Interbay Stadium. Simply show your staff I.D. at the ticket window.

During the summer, Seattle’s Department of Transportation has been conducting major repairs on Nickerson Street. When classes resume on Monday, September 25, the focus of construction on Nickerson Street will be immediately east of 3rd Avenue West. Faculty and staff may want to schedule additional time to their commute to and from campus due to potential delays on Nickerson. The DOT website on this project provides more information.

An article by Professor of Sociology Kevin Neuhouser was recently published in Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion, 2017, 13 (article 8). The article is titled "Strict but Not (Gender) Conservative: Refining the Strict Church Thesis in Light of Brazilian Pentecostalism."

An essay by Professor of English Susan VanZanten was published in the September 19 issue of Bearings Online, a publication of the Collegeville Institute. The essay, exploring Jane Austen’s timeless appeal on the 200th anniversary of her death, is titled “Beyond Breeches, Buckles, and Balls: Celebrating Kindness with Jane Austen at 200.” Read the essay online.

Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction David Wicks was elected to the board of directors for the Northwest Council for Computers in Education (NCCE). He will serve as the higher education representative for the next three years. NCCE is a professional learning organization that hosts an annual conference for thousands of Northwest educators each spring.

A book review by Assistant Professor of English Peter Moe was published in Teaching English in the Two-Year College, vol. 41, no. 1, Sept. 2017, pp. 115-20.  Peter reviewed Stanley Fish's Winning Arguments: What Works and Doesn't Work in Politics, the Bedroom, the Courtroom, and the Classroom.

An article by Joshua Tom, assistant professor of sociology, was published this month in Sociological Spectrum. The article, titled "Social Sources of Community Solidarity in U.S. Congregations," was coauthored by Todd Ferguson (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor), Samuel Stroope (Louisiana State University), Brita Andercheck (Southern Methodist University), and Brandon Martinez (Providence College).

From University Archivist Adrienne Meier: The first New Student Orientation, titled “Get Acquainted Week,” was held in September 1934. Activities included religious programs, intramural athletic contests, and social events. The three main social events were a “dormitory get-together” with introduction of student officers and residence hall traditions; a formal reception and general mixer, which included a speech by then college President C. Hoyt Watson; musical numbers by music department faculty; and hikes to local beaches. High school students went to Lincoln Park in West Seattle, and the college students to Golden Gardens in Ballard, where they enjoyed a bonfire and picnic supper. 

Intramural baseball games between teams of former students and new students were held most afternoons. The religious programs included morning and evening devotions in the college dining room, a students’ meeting on Wednesday evening with prayer and testimony, and the convocation at First Free Methodist Church (referred to here as the College Church) on Sunday morning given by the college pastor. “Everyone agreed that along the religious line the spiritual tide is high and that the school year had started in a most encouraging way,” (Seattle Pacific College Bulletin, September, 1934).
