Diversity 101 workshop
You are invited to participate in Diversity 101, a workshop led by Sandra Mayo, vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The workshop will be held on Friday, November 1, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room.
What do we mean by “diversity” at SPU and why does it even matter? This introductory Diversity 101 training is intended primarily for those who are new to the SPU community or unfamiliar with our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. With a focus on building individual and institutional capacity, this training provides a shared language and framework for SPU employees to move forward productively in the work of diversity.
Registration is open to all, while priority will be given to new employees. Lunch will be provided for all who sign by Thursday, October 25. Follow this link to register using Skillsoft.
Once logged into Skillsoft, select the “Instructor Led Training Sessions” link on the left side of the screen, then select “Session Schedule.” This will bring up a whole list of available classes, and you can choose “Actions” for this class, then a pop up window allows you to “Enroll in this Session.” If you have any issues or questions about registration, please contact Mardeth Hughes in Human Resources.

First Fridays Colloquium Series “Seeking Justice Through Stories”
Faculty and staff are invited to the “First Fridays Colloquium Series” sponsored by Social Justices and Cultural Studies. The series is titled “Seeking Justice Through Stories.” The next events are Friday, November 2, in Weter Hall 201.

Two-factor authentication for SPU
In an ongoing effort to ensure better security for all users and campus data resources, Computer and Information Systems announces that faculty, staff, and student employees may now turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) with Duo Security as an additional layer of security for their SPU account.
After setting up your account, you’ll use both something you know (i.e., your password) and something you have (e.g., smart phone, security token, etc.) to login to your SPU account, thus preventing malicious users from gaining access to the personal and student data your account has access to, even if your password is compromised. STEM Mega Meet-Up Wednesday, October 24
Do you know students who are looking for internships? Or students who are curious to know more about a particular company? Encourage your students to attend the STEM Mega Meet-up on Wednesday, October 24, 2:30–5 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall and Eaton Hall. This casual gathering of employers — including Sound Transit, Amazon, King Country Environmental Health, and many more — is a great way for students to chat informally with a professional in an industry that interests them. They may even find a job or internship that’s a good fit for them.
Companies in the sciences (biology, chemistry, ecology, etc.) will be in the Eaton Hall lobby. Otto Miller Hall lobby will be filled with employers in technology, engineering, and math. All undergrad and grad students are welcome. See a complete list of companies coming to campus.

Tickets on Sale Now for Sacred Sounds of Christmas
The 19th annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas, featuring the SPU Music Department’s nationally recognized student and faculty musicians performing traditional Advent and Christmas carols from around the world, is Sunday, November 25, 7 p.m. in Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle. The concert is a consistent sellout, and tickets are now available.

ODEI diversity action plan and drop-in office hours
The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) offers seed grants to support departmental diversity action plans, which each department will create over the next three years. As your office or department begins developing your action plan, consider applying for a seed grant.
The following categories are eligible to apply for funding:
- Academic departments initiating the Departmental Readiness Evaluation (DRE).
- Non-academic departments working on initiatives that advance one or more of the University's strategic diversity goal areas.

Drawn Out: A Group Exhibition at the Seattle Pacific Art Center Gallery
A group exhibit that looks at "drawing from the fringes" is now featured at the SPAC (Seattle Pacific Art Center Gallery.) Zack Bent, assistant professor of art, is the curator for the exhibit. “Drawing is taken as a core skill and way of knowing in art education. My approach here has been to find those experimental places where artists are exploring in their practice ways of seeing that have a loose or direct connection with drawing expressed through a host of mediums — text, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video, painting, and found object/appropriation.” SPAC is open Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free.(Image credit: Hanita Schwartz Relicaptia, P. 50, 2015-18, Photograph After The Raft of the Medusa by Géricault.)

Shop for home décor, hostess gifts, accessories, gift certificates, and much more in a festive holiday atmosphere at this year’s Mistletoe Market, Friday, October 26, 9 a.m..–7 p.m. and Saturday, October 27, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church Fine Center. There will be gifts for everyone on your list. Cash, checks, and credit cards accepted. This event is hosted by Sigma Rho, a philanthropic organization of Family and Consumer Sciences. All proceeds support student scholarships.

You have until 9:59 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6, to have stationery orders delivered Friday, November 16. Stationery orders are delivered once a month. Cascade Youth Symphony Honors Stephen Newby
The Cascade Youth Symphony will honor Professor of Music Stephen Newby and his 25 years of performing gospel music in the Pacific Northwest during a special GospelFest Jubilee celebration on Saturday, November 17, at 2 p.m. at Benaroya Hall. The concert will feature a 150-voice mass choir of some of the best gospel groups in the area, including the Seattle Pacific University Gospel Choir. Stephen will also conduct the “Afro-American Symphony” by William Grant Still. Tickets are available online.

Ferreiro's paper published
A paper by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro titled "Quia pax et caritas facta est: Unity and Peace in Leander’s Homily at the Third Council of Toledo (589)" was published in Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum 48 (2016–2017) 87–108. The paper was presented at the conference, Konzil und Frieden in September 2016 at Humboldt Universität zu in Berlin.

Milestones

Professor Emeritus Carl Roseveare
Professor Emeritus of Education Carl Roseveare passed away September 18, 2018. Carl had retired from the School of Education Learning Resources and had lived at Warm Beach Senior Community since 2012 with his wife, Arlene. Carl was with Seattle Pacific from 1973 to 1998. His career at Seattle Pacific was multifaceted. He originally joined the School of Education in 1965 as an assistant professor, and later held positions in the Division of Continuing Studies; Computer and Information Systems; Media Services; and, finally, the Library. At SPU, Roseveare was known for three loves: God, others, and computers. He devoted a great deal of his life to the nurture of students. In spring 1998, he traveled to Peru to set up a Spanish-language computer system for a parachurch organization. He is survived by Arlene, three sons, and their families.
