University Communications has created a Vendor List of trusted vendors for items including apparel, stickers, awards, and other items. Campus departments are free to use whatever vendors they’d like to use, but these vendors are familiar with SPU’s color and logo requirements.

More than 3,000 SPU parents and family members received the November In the Loop parents’ e-newsletter, which included information about the Center for Career and Calling’s student resources, applying for scholarships, ways students have found a new church home while away at college, and more.

A message from Residence Life: The resident advisor selection process begins Winter Quarter, and we need your help to recruit qualified candidates. Our campus is blessed with students who have academic, spiritual, and servant-leadership gifts. However, many students do not apply without the encouragement of faculty, staff, and peers. We are seeking an applicant pool that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of our community, with increased numbers of male students who engage in the selection process. There are several ways faculty, staff, and students will be notified or can find out whether SPU will close or delay opening due to inclement weather.  The most current and complete information will be provided on the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800. SPU will also send emails and text messages announcing the closure or delay to email addresses and cell phone numbers posted in SPU-Alert, which is SPU's mass-notification system for sending emergency messages. The changing weather in Seattle can make decisions to close or delay opening difficult, but we try to have notification on the Emergency Closure Hotline and issue texts and emails via SPU-Alert prior to 6 a.m.

To confirm or update your SPU-Alert cell phone numbers or email addresses, access the Banner Information System and select Personal Menu and then Emergency Alert System. For additional information, visit the Inclement Weather webpage on the Emergency Preparedness website.

The 10th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to add or remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? If so, contact Human Resources (HR) to complete the appropriate form. Changes might include events that are expected to impact your benefits and deductions, such as your spouse or children gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you wish to make to your 403(b) account contributions must be made by the 10th of the month. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.–6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Mardeth Hughes in HR at 206-281-2816.

You have until 9:59 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, to have stationery orders delivered Monday, December 17. Stationery orders are delivered once a month. Nalline Baliram, assistant professor of teacher education, and School of Education alumnus Jeffrey Youde ’11, had their article "A Meta-analytic Synthesis: Examining the Academic Impacts of Feedback on Student Achievement" published recently in the peer-reviewed IDE-Online Journal (International Dialogues on Education: Past and Present).

A chapter written by Al Erisman, executive in residence emeritus, was included in the new book, Christian Mind in the Emerging World: Faith Integration in Asian Contexts and Global Perspectives. Edited by Peter Tze Ming Ng, Wing Tai Leung, and Vaughan King Tong Mak, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, this book includes "The Purpose and Practice of Business for Christians in the Asian-Chinese Context," by Albert Erisman, pp 288–314.

Jill Heiney-Smith, assistant professor of teacher education and director of graduate teacher education, was this year’s winner of the Washington Educational Research Association’s Outstanding Dissertation Award. This award recognizes exemplary dissertation research by doctoral students related to improving K–12 or higher education. Congratulations, Jill!

Eugene Lemcio (Лемцьо), emeritus professor of New Testament and affiliate professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington, is the author of  "The Woman and Her Children in 4 Maccabees 16–18 and Revelation 12: An Experiment in Theological Reflection Upon the Witness of the Bible in Greek," Наукові Записки: Серія Богослов'я [Academic Texts. Series Theology]. Lviv: Ukrainian Catholic University, 2019.

Bo Lim, associate professor of Old Testament, presented his paper, "Theological and Postcolonial Interpretation for a Global Church: An Asian American Perspective," for a session on post-colonialism and Theological Interpretation at the 2018 Society of Biblical Literature's annual meeting.

Peter Moe, assistant professor of English and director of campus writing, had two articles published recently. "Inhabiting Ordinary Sentences," which appears in Composition Studies, vol. 46, no. 2, fall 2018, pp. 79–95, uses pieces of student writing to explore how a writer might inhabit a sentence. His second article, "Virginia Tufte’s Sentences," appears in Style, vol. 52, no. 4, 2018, pp. 385–403, and is the first piece of scholarship giving close attention to the sentence-level pedagogy of Virginia Tufte.

Alyssa Walter, assistant professor of history, contributed the chapter "Petitioning Saddam: Voices From the Iraqi Archives" in an edited volume titled Truth, Silence and Violence in Emerging States: Histories of the Unspoken, edited by Aidan Russell and published by Routledge.

A memorial service for Ken Tollefson, emeritus professor of anthropology who retired in 1996 after 31 years of teaching at Seattle Pacific, will be held Thursday, December 13, at 1 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. Ken passed away on November 20 at the age of 83.
