June 13: Roberts Wesleyan commissioning service for Dr. Porterfield

Roberts Wesleyan and Northeastern Seminary will hold a service of worship and commissioning for Dr. Deana Porterfield on Tuesday, June 13, 7 p.m. EDT. They have invited the SPU community to join virtually via this livestream link.

SPU Voices podcast: "Kidnapped Redemption" with alumna Phyllis Sorter '64

Phyllis Sortor, SPU 's 2023 Alumna of the Year, served as a missionary with Free Methodist World Missions in Nigeria working for 10 years when she was kidnapped by a terrorist group hoping to end her work with the Fulani, an indigenous nomadic people group. A new feature-length film has recently been released documenting her kidnapping and time in Nigeria. She immediately returned to Nigeria and built Schools for Africa, an organization providing schools, primary healthcare, grazing reserves, and water and grass restoration for the Fulani people.

Staff Council All-Star Bake-Off

The 2023 Staff Council Bake-Off is Wednesday, June 14, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. in Tiffany Loop, Staff Council is preparing for the annual spring event featuring a new and improved all-staff bake-off. This year’s event will see the return of the annual pie eating contest, as well as lawn games, music, and of course, the bake-off! Have questions? Reach out to staffcouncil@spu.edu and they will be happy to answer them for you.

Professor of Sociology Karen Snedker was quoted in The Seattle Times on June 9 in a story titled "Seattle’s tiny homes get a big upgrade." Karen talked about creating community in homeless populations based on her research in tent cities.
