Community Bible Study: The Book of Revelation

Perplexed by the Book of Revelation and how it speaks to everyday life? Then join a Community Bible Study on Wednesday nights starting April 2. The study will be taught by Rob Wall, the Paul T. Walls professor of scripture and Wesleyan studies. Each week's class will consist of lecture, contemplative reflection, and inter-generational small groups focused on application of the text. Art Center Gallery Presents Senior Exhibits

Beginning April 2, the works of graduating students in the Art Department will be on exhibit in the Art Center Gallery. The first exhibit titled “Corpus Lingua” features paintings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. Four student artists explore the marvels and mysteries of the human form, and each artist’s perspective demonstrates the body for its sanctified presence. The exhibit runs until April 18, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 10, 5-7:30 p.m.

This summer, the John Perkins Center's SPRINT program will send eight student teams to learn and serve alongside local leaders around the globe. Hire a SPRINT student or a team to help around your house with spring cleaning, yard work, or other chores to help them raise money for their trip. The rate is $10 per student per hour. Cigna’s Urgent Care Locations Now at Your Fingertips

When SPU started with Cigna in July 2014, there was a problem with the “Find a Doctor (or Service)” function on Cigna’s website. Locations that had previously registered with Cigna as primary care and urgent care were not selected during a
Search for “urgent care.”  This has been fixed and you can now search within mycigna.com, under “Find a Doctor or Service,” and under “Place by Type” and select “Urgent Care Services.” The outdated list of urgent care facilities that was on the Human Resources website has been removed now that the functionality of mycigna.com has been restored. We recommend that you check convenient urgent care locations to determine whether they are part of the “OAP” (Open Access Plus) network.

Special Evening of Music

Assistant Professor of Music and soprano Chérie Hughes along with guitarist Roberto Limón will present a special evening of music on Wednesday, March 26, 7:30 p.m. at the Jack Straw Cultural Center in the University District. The duo will discuss and perform music from their recording project as part of the Jack Straw Artist in Residence program. The project includes nine Sephardic songs by Catalonian composer Matilde Salvador, and the premiere of a new work set to the poetry of Holocaust survivor Henriette Asseo and written for them by New York-based Mexican composer Samuel Zyman.

Hughes has performed throughout the United States and Mexico and is a frequent collaborator with Limón, a member of the Mexican government's Grupos Artísticos de Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. They are both resident artists of Jack Straw Productions, the Northwest's only nonprofit multidisciplinary audio arts center.

Pérez Gives Presentation

Dean of Students for Community Life Joel Pérez gave a presentation at the annual conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in Baltimore. The title of the presentation was “Transforming the Higher Education Landscape: A Focus on Supporting Latino/a Students, Administrators, and Faculty.”

SOE Faculty in Educational Research Journal

Professor of Counselor Education Christopher Sink recently served as the special editor of the Educational Research Journal, the official publication of the Hong Kong Educational Research Association. This special edition titled “Education and Sustainability” includes articles by international and national scholars including Chris, as well as SOE faculty members June Hyun, Jorge Preciado, Cynthia Strong, Tracy Williams, and doctoral graduate Suzannah Calvery.




Daniel Castelo
Castelo Edits Issue of International Journal

Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo recently edited an issue of the International Journal of Systematic Theology (16.2/April 2014). For the issue, Daniel brought together a team of scholars from the U.S, Great Britain, and Canada to focus on the topic of the Holy Spirit. In addition to a guest editorial (pp. 124-125), Daniel also contributed the article "The Spirit, Creaturehood, and Sanctification: On Avoiding Theological Overcompensation" (pp. 177-191). In the article, he argues that many of the conflicts surrounding views regarding sanctification are traceable back to (often hidden) assumptions related to the Creator-creation interface.

Article by Mezulis, Doctoral Students Published

An article by Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Amy Mezulis, along with doctoral advisees Katilin Harding and Melissa Hudson, was recently published. The article, "Cognitive Mechanisms Linking Low Trait Positive Affect to Depressive Symptoms: A Prospective Diary Study,” was published  in the journal Cognition & Emotion. The article can be found online.

Hamilton Quoted in National Syndicated Story on Graham

Associate Professor of History Michael Hamilton was quoted in a nationally syndicated story about Franklin Graham's recent support for Russian President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on homosexuality. Michael compares how Rev. Billy Graham and his son, Franklin, deal with controversy. The article appeared in the Charlotte Observer and a number of other media outlets.
