Nathan Poole, fiction writer and 2013-14 Milton Fellow for Image journal, will give a lecture on "American Penance: The Tradition and Technique of Guilt in Fiction” on Thursday, May 1, 7 p.m. at the Seattle Pacific Art Center Gallery. He will examine the foundation for acts of penance as dramatic catharsis in fiction, and the development throughout the 19th and 20th centuries of this technique in America, leading up to writers like Peter Orner, Jamie Quatro, and others. This event is free and open to the public.

May is coming quickly and that means online Open Enrollment is right around the corner. Along with Open Enrollment comes the annual Benefits Fair. The Human Resources staff would love to have you join us at the fair on Friday, May 9, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. Please take a few moments to come by. We hope you’ll enjoy some snacks and connecting with co-workers. The fair is an excellent opportunity to learn more about SPU’s two medical plans, as well as discuss questions or concerns you may have. Representatives from other featured vendors will also be present, including Delta Dental of Washington, VSP (our vision plan), Long Term Care Solutions, BAC (administrator for our health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts), and many more. This April, as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Office of Safety and Security will host a free self-defense class for faculty and staff women on Tuesday, April 29, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in Demaray 354. The class will cover safety techniques for home and public safety, as well as basic physical defense. Those who are interested can register online.
