Pursuing Wellness

College is a different experience for every student. It’s easy for students to get caught up in class schedules, sports, clubs, volunteer work, homework, studying, and friends — and forget about their own emotional, physical, and mental health. The SPU Wellness Initiative is a group of faculty and staff working to improve the mental, physical, and emotional health of undergraduates. Its goal is to help your student through college and address difficulties he or she might face, providing tools to support being well.

The Wellness Blog launched in Winter 2016, with weekly updates, videos, and resources. Students and parents can access information about common mental health problems that students deal with daily. It also provides information about campus and community resources available for your student. Winter Quarter’s focus was stress — what it looks like, how it affects your mind, techniques to ease stress and how to respond to friends who are experiencing it. Spring Quarter’s focus has been anxiety, including social anxiety, test anxiety, and panic attacks. Being mindful gives students the self-awareness to cope effectively with stress and anxiety. Weekly Mindful Yoga sessions are open to all students.
