The Department of Sociology offers a major in Sociology and minors in Sociology and Anthropology.

Sociology is the systematic study of societies, groups, and human interaction. As a community of social scientists committed to the Christian faith, the Seattle Pacific University sociology faculty seek to educate students in the perspectives and methods of sociology in order to prepare them for faithful service and leadership. 

The Department of Sociology's goals are for students to develop a sociological imagination that allows them to critically apply sociological perspectives to social institutions and problems, to learn the skills of research design, data collection, and data analysis. Students also explore the interrelationship between Christian faith and sociology so they can critically and faithfully apply their sociological knowledge in their work, communities, and spiritual life.

By training students in the sociological perspective, they are well prepared to work toward the SPU mission of "engaging the culture and changing the world" with wisdom and grace in accordance with the best sociological knowledge and practice. 

SPU students majoring in Sociology have obtained positions in international community development, NGOs, social service agencies, and with research groups. Graduates have also obtained graduate degrees in Sociology, Law, Social Work, Social Policy, and Counseling. 

Admission to the Major or Minor
To qualify for admission to the Sociology major, a student must have a 2.5 minimum SPU GPA and 15 credits of completed work in the discipline.

Application to this program may be made through the Sociology Major or Minor Application form (PDF). A student must complete the major or minor requirements in effect when the student is admitted to the major or minor.

Sociology Major
A maximum of 10 credits of SOC 4940 can apply to the major.

Note: Students in the Sociology major are strongly encouraged to take the core courses in sequence — introduction, statistics, methods, theory, and then capstone.

With the help of their advisors, students should create a plan that includes the combination of elective courses that will best prepare them to achieve their career and life goals.

Sociology Minor
SOC 4940 does not apply to the minor.

Anthropology Minor

Requires an approved archeology course from a local community college. 

Note: Students should consult a sociology advisor to create a course of study that best accommodates their educational program.
