Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics Department Faculty Spanish is, after Chinese, the most common first language in the world, spoken by some 500 million people. It is an unofficial second language in the United States. Spanish Studies In support of the SPU mission to cultivate graduates of competence and character, the Spanish Studies major and minor programs seek to further the linguistic and cultural competence of our students by affording them opportunities for learning in classroom settings and overseas. As with other Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics majors, there is a requirement for a Senior Paper presented in conjunction with the Capstone seminar and for significant study abroad. Students must complete all non-credited and language proficiency requirements found on the Languages, Cultures and Linguistics website. Spanish Studies Requirements Robert Baah, Contact Person The Spanish Studies major consists of 51 credits minimum, 25 of which must be upper-division and 18 of which must be taught in Spanish. Students have the opportunity to complete their study abroad requirement on an SPU study abroad program or on an approved alternative program. Admission to the Major or Minor Applicants for a major or minor within the Department of Foreign Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in all college work applicable to the B.A. degree and a 2.5 GPA in 10 credits of coursework at SPU in Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics. Application may be made through the Major or Minor Application form (PDF). A student must complete the major or minor requirements in effect when the student is admitted to the major or minor.
