School of Business, Government, and Economics Faculty

The mission of the School of Business, Government, and Economics is to prepare students for service and leadership in business and society by developing their professional competence and integrity in the context of Christian faith and values; and to develop an academically and theologically rigorous understanding of business and economics and to effectively promote this understanding through teaching, pursuit of scholarship, and engagement with the broader business community.

SBGE Distinctives
While the programs of the School of Business, Government, and Economics are appropriately similar to those offered by other universities in the coverage of the basic business knowledge and skills, at Seattle Pacific University, they reflect two mission-driven distinctives:

• To develop and promote a theologically based understanding of business.
• To be a superior provider of applied learning.

SBGE Majors and Minors
The following majors and minors are offered by SBE:

Students majoring in business administration may choose to concentrate in one of the following areas:

• Economics
• Finance
• Information Systems
• International Business
• Management
• Marketing
• Social Enterprise

Students majoring in Economics may choose to concentrate in one of the following areas:

• Developmental Economics
• Economic Policy
• Financial Economics
• International Economics

Students who are interested in a Business, Accounting, or Economics major are encouraged to indicate their interest upon application to SPU through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. This declaration of interest does not commit the student to a major within SBGE, but it assures that an advisor from within the school will be assigned and information about various SBGE activities will be communicated.

Admission to Majors in the School of Business, Government, and Economics
Consistent with its mission, the School of Business, Government, and Economics admits students to its majors on the basis of academic achievement, personal character, leadership potential, and record of service.

Freshmen and Transfer "Direct Admissions"

A few academically highly qualified students are admitted directly to SBGE majors upon acceptance to the University. Incoming freshmen must identify their intended SBGE major on their SPU admissions application, and they will automatically be considered for direct admission. Transfer students who have completed four lower-division core courses within their intended SBGE major can also choose to be considered for direct admission when they apply to SPU.

Direct admission is highly competitive, and students who are not directly admitted are encouraged to apply as sophomores, or during their first year as a transfer student.

Current SPU Student Admission

For matriculated students, formal application and admission to a major is required prior to enrollment in most upper-division SBGE courses. Admission is selective and based upon prior academic performance. To meet the minimum requirements for admission to a major, the student must:

• Have attained at least sophomore standing.
• Completed at least 15 credits (10 credits for junior or senior transfer students) in SBE courses (ACCT, BUS, ECN).
• Have either a minimum of 2.7 cumulative GPA from all institutions and a minimum of 2.7 cumulative GPA in all SBGE courses, OR a 3.0 SBGE GPA. Attainment of the minimum GPA standards does not guarantee admission to a major as the total number of admitted students is limited by capacity.

Application to a business major may be made online between December 20 and January 20 of each year, and after all admission requirements are satisfied.

• Students who enter SPU as freshmen should apply for admission to the School of Business, Government, and Economics by January 20 of their sophomore year.
• Transfer students should follow the regular admission process and submit their major applications by January 20 after completing all admission requirements.

Students who have been admitted to another SPU major should contact the SBGE office for permission to enroll in upper-division business courses.

Junior or senior transfer students with a college GPA of at least 2.8 should contact the SBGE office for permission to enroll in major-restricted upper-division courses.

To be awarded a degree from the School of Business, Government, and Economics, students must meet the major and any concentration requirements in effect at the time of admittance to a major, and must have completed a minimum of 45 credit hours in the major at SPU.

New Majors Orientation

Newly admitted students will be welcomed to the SBGE community at a mandatory orientation dessert. The orientation will include information on the SBGE mission and practical tips on succeeding in SBGE majors. All newly admitted majors are required to attend this event.

Writing Competency Requirement
All SBGE majors (i.e., Accounting, Business Administration, and Economics) must meet the writing competency requirement outlined below:

• SBGE majors who fulfill the University writing competency requirement based on pre-college indicators, or who have earned a C (2.0) or better in a college-level composition course are not required to take ENG 2201 Intermediate College Writing, and have satisfied the SBGE writing competency requirement.
• SBGE majors who are required to take ENG 2201 "Intermediate College Writing," must earn a grade of B (3.0) or better in ENG 2201 in order to satisfy the SBGE writing competency requirement.
• SBGE majors with a grade of B- (2.7) or below in ENG 2201 must complete BUS 2601 Business Writing Tutorial and earn a grade of B (3.0) or better.
• Transfer students who have not previously taken a college composition course must take the English Placement exam, and they must meet the same requirements outlined above.

Computer Competency Requirement
Demonstration of computer competency is required of all students graduating with an SBGE major. This is documented by passing BUS 1700, or by passing a competency exam covering the equivalent.

Admission Requirements for Minors in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, and Economics
To be accepted to a minor in the School of Business, Government, and Economics, a student must have attained at least sophomore standing and have achieved a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA from all institutions. The student must fill out a Minors Application form (PDF), available year-round.
