Pixler Excels in Multiple Sports
Three conference titles
Jessica Pixler |
Jessica Pixler’s timing is impeccable. Running what she described as the perfect race at the perfect time, Pixler coasted to victory in the mile at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships March 10, 2007, in Boston.
It was just the latest, greatest feat by the Seattle Pacific University freshman, who began her year as a member of the soccer team and has since broken a series of school and conference records and finished among the top 10 in three national championships.
By design, she held back early in the indoor championship race. Sensing the pace was slowing, Pixler pounced. She took the lead with a thousand meters remaining and ran away from the field. She won by nearly 5 seconds, smashing her own SPU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records in a time of 4 minutes, 42.42 seconds.
It was also a great day for three of Pixler’s teammates. Karin Rohde, lopping a total of 7 seconds off her personal-best time on consecutive days, finished fifth in the mile. Teona Perkins took fourth in the high jump, and Eddie Strickler ran eighth in the 800. All made the All-America team, and the Falcon women were seventh overall in the NCAA.
With the outdoor track season yet to finish, Pixler has already been a part of Seattle Pacific’s top three women’s team achievements in 2006–07. In addition to the track team’s success, the soccer team advanced to the regional championship game. Cross country won the GNAC and finished sixth in the nation. Individually, Pixler won three conference titles — cross country, indoor mile, and 800 — and she was 10th at both the NCAA and USA Junior Cross Country Champion
