ETM workshops: What’s new in Canvas?
A message from Educational Technology and Media: This quarter, we’re offering the following ETM workshops covering the topics of, "What’s new in Canvas;" Online polling tools with Microsoft Forms and Teams;" and "ETM Pedagogy Showcase" to support your digital side of teaching. Most of our workshops are offered on campus and repeated online.
Tuesday, October 15. What’s New in Canvas
Canvas has released several updates over the summer. We’ll update you on what they are and walk you through these new features.
- 1–2 p.m. On campus at ETM in the lower level of the library
- 3–4 p.m. (Online). Contact ETM at etmhelp@spu.edu for the Teams link.
Other upcoming workshops are Tuesday, Oct. 29: Online Polling Tools for Teaching: Microsoft Forms and Teams (1–2 p.m. at ETM; 3–4 p.m. online via Teams); and Tuesday Nov. 12: ETM Pedagogy Showcase (1–2 p.m. at ETM)

Oct 24: International Open Access Week Workshop
Join the SPU Library in celebrating Open Access Week! Together with Educational Technology Services (ETM) and librarian colleagues, we’ll work with you to self-archive your scholarship and increase discoverability. We also hope this will benefit those who might have no other way to access it. There will be a short overview of self-archiving at 11 a.m. Bring your laptop and either drop-in or stay the entire time. We look forward to coming together as a community to further the work of open access. Coffee, tea, and cookies will also be available. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tell you students: Church and Ministry Fair on Oct. 17
The annual Church and Ministry Fair will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. This is an opportunity for students to explore several churches in the area and find the right place for them to connect and further their spiritual formation. Representatives from over 25 churches will join us in a casual atmosphere. If you have any questions, contact StudentMinistries@spu.edu.

History lecture on youth voting rights and 26th amendment
The History Department and the student history club HIndsight are hosting an event with author and scholar Dr. Jennifer Frost to talk about her book, "Let Us Vote!:" Youth Voting Rights & the 26th Amendment, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 5–6 p.m. in Eaton Hall 112. She will talk about the multifaceted endeavor to achieve youth voting rights in the United States over a 30-year period starting in World War II. Please come and invite your students.

SPU Library online 2024 Voter Guide
The library has put together a 2024 Voter Guide which contains information about voter registration, candidates, and Washington state initiatives. It also lists online public events and recommended readings. The goal is to provide the SPU community with nonpartisan information they can use and share with students. As a reminder, there is a ballot drop box on the north side of the bookstore on West Nickerson Street.

The Faculty/Staff Bulletin is published every Monday during the academic year or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday. The next deadline is Thursday, Oct. 17. The next issue will be published Monday, Oct. 21.

Dearborn's chapter published
A chapter by Kerry Dearborn, emerita professor of theology, was published in Unsaying the Commonplace: George MacDonald and the Critique of Convention, co-edited by Danny Gabelman and Amanda Vernon, (Winged Lion Press, 2024). The chapter is titled, “Rethinking the Dark Side: MacDonald’s Subversive Challenges to ‘Enlightened’ Theories of Social Darwinism.”
