Office: Crawford 208

Education: BA, Whitworth College; MMus, University of Oregon. At SPU since 1992.

David Anderson heads the choral program at SPU, and directs the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. He has held this position since 1992, longer than anyone in the school’s history. SPU’s rich choral heritage extends back to the school’s founding, when Adelaide Beers, wife of first president Alexander Beers, directed the choir. Under David Anderson’s direction, the Concert Choir at SPU has appeared at the Music Educators’ National Conference (MENC) Washington State Convention, the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) Northwest Convention, the MENC Northwest Convention and the ACDA National Convention.

David Anderson’s conducting studies include work under Helmuth Rilling (Germany), Eric Ericson (Sweden), and Avner Itai (Israel). Prior experience includes teaching at Shaw Junior High School in Spokane, Washington; Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Washington; and West Albany High School in Albany, Oregon. Before joining SPU, he served as choral director at the University of North Alabama. A member of ACDA, MENC, the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM), and the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO), he is active as an adjudicator, a clinician, and a guest conductor.

He loves to discover forgotten and lesser-known literature. A colleague from another university recently said, “Your literature is quintessential, David Anderson. Your students are blessed by your passion for the unexplored and your knowledge of choral literature. One of your hallmarks, my friend.”

He is a member of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church. His wife is an elementary school music teacher. Together they have three sons and a beautiful granddaughter.

Why I Teach at SPU

David Anderson, Associate Professor of Choral Music

"Quite simply, the students. What an incredible thing: getting together with wonderful people every day, working hard, learning a lot and having fun in rehearsal, then performing beautiful music together. I am blessed."
