Business Can Change the World

Business Can Change the World

Viewing the purpose of business as more than making a profit is a common theme among many SPU alumni and student entrepreneurs. Here are a few of their stories.

Margo Jarvies Engberg

Margo Jarvies Engberg ’89, Founder of Pinkabella Cupcakes
Pinkabella has donated more than 500,000 cupcakes to nonprofit organizations since the company opened nearly six years ago. Margo believes rising profits create more opportunity to give rather than more to spend.

GloryBee

Alumni Dick ’65 and Pat ’66 Turanski, Former Owners of GloryBee
The recently retired couple turned their company over to their sons, but their mission statement stays the same. “GloryBee Foods is built upon a foundation consisting of a belief in God and educating people about healthy living.”

Jim Mischel ’92, CEO of Electric Mirror, leader in lighted mirrors and mirror TV technology
With “Deuteronomy 8:18” on each product and Bible verses on the company walls, Jim knows the reason for their success. “Remember that it’s God who gives you abundance.”

Alumni Al and Narci Hendricks ’54, owners of El Capitan Apartments
For more than 40 years, these landlords have intentionally kept their rents affordable. “I operate under the Golden Rule,” Al says, and he has a lengthy waiting list of prospective tenants to prove it.
