Multi-Ethnic Programs

Education

Multi-Ethnic Programs (MEP) promotes and supports the exploration and development of racial and ethnic identity for all students. MEP, in collaboration with other departments on campus and student groups, contributes to programs, events, and educational activities to help students develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge to become more culturally engaged people.

Student Support

MEP supports the academic, social, and cultural adjustment and success of students from diverse backgrounds (domestically and abroad) through programs and activities such as Early Connections, one-on-one mentoring, connecting students from similar backgrounds, and referrals to resources on campus and in the community.

Early Connections

Early Connections is a program to help students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds to succeed at SPU. It begins with Early Connections Orientation, which takes place during the three days before Orientation, and is designed to equip students of color from diverse urban backgrounds to make a smooth and successful transition into SPU. Other Early Connections activities and events include study breaks, quarterly kick-offs, academic success workshops, and an end-of-the-year celebration.

Leadership Development and Advising

MEP actively engages in developing student leaders, advising the ASSP Vice President for Intercultural Affairs and Catalyst, and advising the growing number of intercultural clubs including: ACF (After Choir Flavá), Ante Up (hip hop dance) Asian American Association, Black Student Union, International Students Club, MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-med Students), MOSAIC, Ohana ´O Hawaii, and SALSA (Spanish and Latino Student Awareness), and Vietnamese Student Association.

Student-planned events and activities include: Intercultural Retreat, Club Soul, [In Context] discussion series about race, Multicultural Night of Worship, Black History Month celebration, Zumba, Chinese New Year's celebration, Pathway to Medicine, Express Yourself Open Mic, Luau, International Dinner, Cinco de Mayo, and Night of Beats.
