Nursing Praxis: Autumn 2014

New SHS Faculty

The School of Health Sciences has expanded its reach to include a new department: Health and Human Performance. HHP is focused on educating students to become professionals promoting health and well-being in adults and youth. Three full-time HHP faculty join the ranks of SHS:

JoAnn Atwell-Scrivner, PhD, has taught at SPU since 1986. Originally hired as a volleyball coach, JoAnn became a faculty member in 1991. She is the HHP department chair and is responsible for managing the lifetime activity program for the general population and teaching several courses in health.

Dale Cannavan, PhD, has taught at SPU since 2010. Dale has an impressive scholarship record and is committed to integrating research with service. He has a passion for exercise sciences and finds teaching students rewarding.

Jarrett Mentink, PhD, began his career at SPU as an assistant professor of physical education, became the men’s basketball assistant coach, and then transitioned back to teaching as an adjunct for many years. In 2012, Jarret began teaching full time in HHP.

The nursing faculty is growing, as well. We are very excited to welcome such dynamic, well-qualified nurses to our faculty:

April Morgenroth, MSN, PhC, CCRN, has been hired as an assistant professor of nursing. April brings extensive clinical experiences in adult critical care, a broad base of experience as a nurse educator, and a commitment to living her faith as she joins the nursing faculty at SPU.

Christine Hoyle, DNP, ARNP, FNP, will be joining the SHS faculty in January 2015 as the associate dean of the graduate program. Christine is a master educator with 29 years of academic experience plus 40 years in the nursing profession. Her experience as a family nurse practitioner and administrator of the DNP program at the University of Washington will bring to SPU a new depth of expertise.

Yolanda Grandjean, DNP, RN, also joins the SHS faculty in January 2015 as an assistant professor of nursing. An SPU alum, Yoli (BSN ’05) brings professional nursing experience in a broad range of roles from primary care to health-system innovation. Her expertise in public and community health will be a valued asset to SHS nursing students.
