Graduate Hooding Achievement Celebration

Families and friends gathered with the School of Health Sciences to celebrate the 2015 Master of Science in Nursing class with a Hooding Ceremony and SPU Graduate Commencement. All gathered at McKinley Hall for refreshments before the ceremonies.

Following the social gathering, the students donned their regalia and proceeded into the McKinley Hall Theatre for the Hooding Ceremony. The traditional hooding of the graduates signifies the completion of the master’s program with the color of the hood, indicating the area of study (apricot for nursing). Twenty-four students were hooded by graduate faculty members during the ceremony. University Chaplin Bo Lim anointed and blessed the hands of the students. In addition to the MSN graduates, two students who received Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner certificates were also recognized.

Later, MSN graduates processed as a school to the Graduate Commencement ceremony in Tiffany Loop. The Graduate Commencement Speaker was Holli Martinez, founder and executive director of The Martinez Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the professional development and retention of teachers of color in Washington State’s Title I public schools. Each MSN graduate was recognized during the ceremony and their degrees were conferred by SPU President Daniel J. Martin.
