Seniors Katie Ewton and Katie Thralls have each received this year’s Young Alumni Council Scholarship. The scholarship was formed in 2002 by the Young Alumni Council who saw the value of giving back to a current SPU senior who diligently serves the community, excels academically, and actively lives the SPU mission to engage the culture and change the world. This year is the ninth and 10th scholarship Young Alumni Council has awarded. It is possible because of alumni support, especially young alumni, who give generously.
The scholarship committee was impressed with Katie Ewton’s academic achievement and her volunteer commitment to the United Way of King County, where she helps provide low-income individuals with tax-preparation assistance. This is no small feat as she commits four hours each Saturday from January to April. One of her recommendations stated: “Whether it’s using her skills gained in her academic major, helping those around her, or guiding others toward spiritual growth, she has consistently been involved in serving others. … To know Katie is to experience her hospitality.”
The council was also impressed with Katie Thralls’ commitment to her education, evident in her 3.96 GPA earned in various science courses. She is a dedicated volunteer and spent a summer as a research assistant at the VA Medical Center. Her supervisor described Katie’s qualities: “She is an avid student and quick to solve problems that may arise, and yet does not seek attention or applause for her efforts. She is kind, compassionate, generous, and enthusiastic without regard to station, and yet is bright, inquisitive, persistent, and driven.” Katie is also currently a part of the women’s basketball, track, and cross country teams.
Congratulations to Katie Ewton and Katie Thralls!
