Praxis Nursing: Summer 2014

Graduate Hooding Celebrates Achievements

Hooding
Dr. Bethany Rolfe Witham hoods Stephanie Benson, a family nurse practitioner with Community Health Centers of Snohomish County.

SHS graduates and faculty gathered to celebrate the MSN Class of 2014 in conjunction with the first Graduate Commencement ceremony held on SPU’s campus. Before Commencement, the MSN students and their families gathered for a reception, visiting with SHS faculty, family members, and fellow students.

Following the reception, the students donned their academic regalia and proceeded to the SHS hooding ceremony. The traditional hooding signifies the completion of the master’s program; the color of the hood indicates the area of study (apricot is for nursing). Professor Gaylene Altman and Assistant Professor Bethany Rolfe Witham hooded each student in the special ceremony. Bob Zurinsky of University Ministries anointed and blessed the hands of the students. In addition to the MSN graduates, three students receiving post-master's Nurse Practitioner Certificates were recognized.

After the hooding ceremony, MSN graduates processed as a school to the Graduate Commencement ceremony in Tiffany Loop. The 2014 Commencement speaker was Ron Sims, former deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and former King County executive. Each MSN graduate was recognized during the ceremony and their degrees were conferred by SPU President Dan Martin.

Congratulations to the MSN Class of 2014!
