The Art Department at Seattle Pacific offers one major in Art and Design with four concentrations — Photography, Studio, Visual Communication, and Visual Studies. Students can also choose from four minors: Digital Media, Photography, Studio, and Visual Studies.

The program immerses students in the principles of art and design while developing skills in both traditional and experimental media. Through studies in art, design, history, global culture, and critical theory, students expand their cultural literacy and learn to see creative work as a powerful mode of communication and meaning-making. In keeping with SPU’s tradition of integrating faith with learning, the program also invites reflection on how creativity connects to purpose, values, and community.

The Seattle Pacific Art Center (SPAC), located near the heart of campus, provides a vibrant home for this work. Facilities include studios for drawing/painting, sculpture, metals, design, and senior work, along with a computer lab and lecture hall. SPAC also houses the SPAC Gallery, which presents exhibitions by professional artists throughout the year and hosts annual student shows each spring.

Art & design careers

Our graduates build creative careers in photography, studio art, illustration, graphic and visual design, UX/UI, and animation. Many also thrive in arts administration, museums and galleries, cultural programming, marketing, and entrepreneurship. With strong foundations in practice and theory, our students are prepared for professional roles in the arts, media, and design — or in graduate study.
