Meet the SPU Staff Member of the Month for February 2014

Marci Walden

Payments Lead, Finance

As the “go-to” person in accounts payable, collecting, checking, and correcting data, Marci makes sure our vendors are all paid on a timely basis. She responds to problems and inquiries with knowledge, patience, and grace. She consistently strives to work with faculty and staff across campus with a clear understanding that SPU is a community and that her world (finance) is not the only world. Marci is a wonderful example of being a Christ-follower and she is an extraordinary employee and person. This award is long overdue!

Hometown:
Born and raised in Montesano, Washington, until moving to the Seattle area in the fourth grade, she now resides in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood.

Time at SPU:
It will be 31 years in September 2014.

What brought you to SPU?
I came to SPU because of their food service department, which was Saga at the time. I majored in nutrition as a certified dietetic technician at Shoreline Community College — a far cry from finance.

What are some significant changes you’ve seen at SPU over the past 30 years?
There has been a lot of construction: I’ve seen the Library, Eaton Hall, Otto Miller Hall, Emerson Hall, and the new Residence Hall all built during my time here at SPU. I’ve also witnessed changes in the SPU community — becoming much more open in sharing about our lives, especially in the finance office, where we care deeply about each other and our wellbeing.

Who has had the greatest impact on your faith?
My parents, of course, have had a huge impact on my faith. I would also have to say that my SPU community, those I work alongside, and those I’ve met along the way have all played a significant role. I feel blessed to work in a place where my faith is nurtured daily!

What do you do when not at work?
I walk my “durg” (dog), I cook and bake, and I really enjoy spending time with my daughter going to thrift stores.

What are some things that few people know about you?
I love being a dog owner; I have absolutely no desire to ever go on a cruise; I was a towhead as a child (yes, really!); and I enjoy embroidering on tea towels, which my 91-year-old grandmother taught me when I was in grade school.

What is the best part of your job?
I really enjoy training and teaching others the accounts payable process. I enjoy the friendships I’ve made and the camaraderie we share in the Finance Office, but most of all, I love the contributions that SPU as a community makes to our students.

If you could live any other place, where would that be?
There is no other place I would rather live. I love all the seasons we get here, including the rain. I am a bona fide Pacific Northwest kind of girl!

Please join Staff Council in congratulating Marci Walden as Staff of the Month!
