Campus Marks One Year Since Tragedy
In March, Jon Meis ’14 received the Citizen Service Before Self Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Foundation on March 25. He received the award at Arlington National Cemetery for “his heroism on June 5, 2014, when he disarmed and subdued a shooter.”
On June 5, 2015, the SPU community gathered in First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to campus, for a special chapel service on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy that resulted in injuries to two students and the death of freshman Paul Lee. The day concluded with a performance of Fauré’s Requiem, hosted by the Music Department as a time of worship and reflection.
“When I think about last year, I’m reminded how we relied on God for comfort in the midst of grief, and how we also saw a vision of God’s redemption as our community came together in prayer and unity,” SPU President Dan Martin wrote in a message to faculty, students, and staff.
