Professional development workshops

New Employee Training: Diversity 101 @ SPU (required for new employees; open to all current employees)

What do we mean by “diversity” at SPU and why does it even matter? This introductory professional development workshop is intended primarily for those who are new to the SPU community or unfamiliar with our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. With a focus on building individual and institutional capacity, this workshop provides a shared language and framework for SPU employees to move forward productively in the work of diversity

Supervisor Training: Navigating difficult conversations (for supervisors)

This workshop provides practical strategies for navigating difficult conversations in the workplace around issues of race, equity, and inclusion. Participants explore common examples of difficult dialogues; examine how past experiences, biases, and fears can trigger unproductive responses; and acquire tools to turn challenging situations into opportunities for growth. This session is intended for supervisors who want to learn how to communicate across differences more productively and with less stress and anxiety.

Hiring Strategies Training

Are you wondering how to develop a diversity-aware strategy for hiring? Do you want to become more aware of unconscious assumptions that can lead to biased outcomes in the hiring process? The ODEI can provide strategies and guidelines for hiring managers to use at various stages of the search process.

Contact odei@spu.edu to schedule a training.

Diversity Learning Lab Program

This program, which includes guided instruction and individual coaching, walks departments through the planning process from conceptualization to development of a diversity action plan. Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to submit their department-level diversity action plans for consideration for seed-grant funding.

Contact odei@spu.edu to schedule a training.

The ODEI offers seed grants to support department-wide initiatives that advance one or more of the university’s strategic diversity goal areas. Through the seed grant program, we hope to encourage department-level planning and foster a sense of mutual commitment to the work of diversity.
