Open House TODAY for Wesley Apartments

Faculty and staff may have a limited opportunity to rent one of the new Wesley Apartments for out-of-town guests. The Wesley Apartments are primarily for single undergraduate and graduate students. Depending on availability, faculty and staff may be able to rent them for guests. An open house introducing the apartments will be held Monday, April 5, from 4-8 p.m. in the main lounge of Emerson Hall.

A Response Book Forum on April 14

The SPU magazine Response is hosting an on-campus forum to discuss Frederick Buechner's book, Now and Then. Buechner's book is part of the SPU Common Curriculum and was featured in the Autumn 2003 Response. The forum is Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Science Building, room 112. SPU Instructor of Theology Doug Koskela will give a special presentation. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by noon on April 12 by calling (206) 281-2051.

Submit Your Copy Requests Online at DocStore

Central Copying Services (CCS) and Kinko's announce an updated service for faculty and staff called DocStore. Copying requests can now be sent electronically via the CCS and Kinko's Web site. For a limited time, all jobs submitted electronically through DocStore will be delivered via the Campus Mailing Services, free of charge. Seattle Pacific Reachout INTernational (SPRINT) is looking for people to debrief nursing mission trip team members. Debriefing is simply spending an hour with a student listening to stories, looking at pictures, and discussing how their life is different because of their trip. Place Your Regalia Order Now

May 24 is the deadline for SPU's faculty and staff to place rental regalia orders for June's Commencement ceremonies. There are two ways to order. Go to Herff-Jones Web site at and enter SPU's customer number: 46000284000. The SPU order number is 243026. (If you ordered online last year then select your name from the pull-down box. If this is your first online order, select "New Faculty Member" and fill out the form). You can also place an order by stopping by the SPU Bookstore and picking up a form.

Encourage Students to Attend the Majors Fair on April 14

Please strongly encourage your students to attend the Majors Fair on Wednesday, April 14, from 11 a.m,-2 p.m, in Upper Gwinn. This event is for students who are still undecided about their major or anyone who's decided but not yet applied to the major of their choice. All application forms will be available for students to complete and turn in. Faculty representatives from every SPU major and career counselors will be available for advice as well.

Nominate Your Student for Student Employee of the Year by April 9

Start making plans to celebrate "National Student Employment Month" in April with your hardworking student employees. Whether you throw a party or just take time to say thank you, it's important to recognize their contribution to your department. You can also nominate an outstanding student for "Student Employee of the Year." Nominations are due by Friday, April 9, and can be completed online. The “Student Employee of the Year" will be recognized at an appreciation ceremony on Friday, April 23. All student employees and supervisors are invited to attend.

Barnabas Servant Leadership Nominations Due by April 16

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2004-05 school year? If so, nominate this student (or students) for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in the name of the recipient to a charity of his or her choice. Want to appreciate a staff member? Act now by nominating them to SPU's Staff Council for one of the "Staff of the Year" awards. Two staff members (one exempt and one non-exempt) will be awarded $1,000 in appreciation of their contribution to the SPU community. Deadline for nominations is April 15. Family and Consumer Science (FCS) Professors Winter Quarter Activities

Gaile Moe and Evette Hackman, associate professors of food and nutritional sciences, participated in a three-day workshop for the dietetic educators in Asilomar, California. Evette also participated in the Northwest American College of Sports Medicine Conference. Sharleen Kato, family and consumer science professor, took part in the Council of Administrators of FCS conference in Salt Lake City. Beth Miller, FCS instructor, attended the Solutia/Ultron conference in Pensacola, Florida, and the GE Lighting Institute's conference titled "Lighting Fundamentals for Commercial Design" in Cleveland, Ohio. Barbara Bovy, FCS professor, was invited to participate in the Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Leadership Conference. Sandra Hartje, FCS associate professor, attended the International Conference on Aging, Disability and Independence in Washington D.C., and presented on universal design.

Suzanne Wolfe Reads from Her New Book on April 13

Suzanne Wolfe, instructor of English and executive director of Image: A Journal of the Arts & Religion, will read from her new book titled Unveiling<.i> on Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the SUB. Called by Publisher's Weekly "dark and lovely," this is Suzanne's first novel, though she has three other books to her credit as a writer. Of this novel, Annie Dillard has written: "With an imaginative vision akin to that of Dante, Unveiling probes the myriad layers of meaning in art, the human soul and ultimately the great world itself. To read this novel is to be reminded that explorations at this depth are inevitably accompanied by uncertainty, suffering and the piercing joy of revelation."

Ferreiro Gives Reformation Lectures at St. Luke's Parish

Alberto Ferreiro, professor of European history, gave a four-part series on the early church to 50 lay volunteers working on their Catechist Certification with the Archdiocese of Seattle. The lectures took place at St. Luke's Parish in Shoreline on March 28. The talks were on apostolic succession, canon of Scripture, creeds and the sacraments. Emphasis was placed on the apostolic origins of the Catholic Church and the deep Jewish influences in all of these areas.

Gallagher Speaks at Trinity Western University and Baylor University

Susan Gallagher, director of the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development, recently spoke at a faculty luncheon at Trinity Western University on "Creating a Climate for Research" and then led a workshop on "The Art of Grant Writing." On March 25-27, along with almost 400 faculty and administrators, Susan participated in a national conference called "Christianity & the Soul of the University" at Baylor University. She chaired a session on mission sponsored by the Council for Colleges and Universities, presented a paper called "Capstones and Coherence: History and Possibilities" and served on the closing plenary panel. Susan reports, “For those who were wondering, the water in Waco tastes terrible and they actually have two live bears in a cage right in the middle of campus."

Jackson Joins Panel on Journalistic Ethics

Rick Jackson, instructor of journalism and advisor to The Falcon, recently participated in a panel discussion of journalism ethics. The event was part of Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council's continuing forums. The forum was titled “The Role of the Reporter: Journalistic Ethics, Objectivity, Accuracy and Fairness." Also on the panel were Seattle Weekly reporter Philip Dawdy, Seattle Post-Intelligencer foreign desk editor Larry Johnson and other local voices. The recent news stories on journalists Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair were also discussed.
