|Payroll, Reimbursement Changes on March 1|
The Finance Office is excited to announce new systems improvements that will benefit many faculty and staff. Effective March, 1, 2006, payment reimbursements will now be directly deposited to your account if you are currently using direct deposit for payroll. Email notification with the amount of your reimbursement will be sent to you when deposits are made. Additionally, direct-deposit remittance forms for payroll will no longer be printed; instead you will receive a link from which to log on to Banner and view your payroll remittance online. We believe these improvements will save you the time and inconvenience of getting and depositing these documents, as well as save the University significant time and money. As such, we are encouraging employees who are not currently on direct deposit to sign up for it. Beginning March 1, 2006, faculty and staff electing to maintain paper check payments over direct deposit for paychecks will be required to pick up their check directly from the Finance Office during normal business hours. Among other benefits, these efforts will also heighten the security of employee payroll information. For the complete details of these changes, please refer to the Finance Office Web site.
|The Music of Jan Krist|
Singer-songwriter Jan Krist will perform originals from her gallery of albums, including her newest release “When Planets Collide," in the SPU Art Center Gallery on Thursday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. Krist's music hits the range of social satire, spiritual longing, stark truthfulness, and mischievous fun. Krist's 1993 recording “Decapitated Society" was selected by Billboard magazine as that year's best album in a (broadly defined) gospel genre. Rooted in Detroit, she has earned a devoted nationwide following in the past 15 years with expert guitar playing (including amazing open tunings), literate lyrics, and the indescribable ratio between emotion, honesty, and humor. Admission is free. The Art Center Gallery is located at 3 West Cremona Street and Queen Anne Avenue North. The event is sponsored by Image journal.
|The Left, The Right, and God's Politics|
Speaker, author, and activist Jim Wallis will discuss his latest book, God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It during a special lecture on Monday, February 6, at 7 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Wallis is one of the founders of Sojourners, a Christian ministry devoted to social justice. This event is sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministries. It is free and open to the public.
|Stories About Northwest Women|
As part of SPU's English Department's annual Fan Gates Reading, Northwest fiction writer Kirsten Sundberg Lunstrum will read from her collection of short stories titled This Life She's Chosen on Wednesday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. Her book was a 2005 Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. The Boston Globe said, "Still and hauntingly ambiguous, these collected stories seem inspired, even inhabited, by the coastal fog of the Pacific Northwest … This is the fiction of mood and sensibility, not of incident." This event is free and open to the public.
|Come to SFS and See Their New Mural|
A new mural titled “Engaging the Culture, Changing the World" is now on display in the Student Financial Services (SFS) office, located in lower Demaray Hall. SFS invites the SPU community to join them on Friday, February 3, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. for light refreshments and a chance to view their new mural.
|Student Research Papers Wanted for AoA Symposium|
The second annual “Acting on AIDS" symposium is an opportunity for students to
present their original research focused on HIV/AIDS. The symposium gives students a
platform to integrate their area of study or passion about the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Professors are encouraged to come alongside students for an academic quarter to
wrestle with the issue of this disease and faith. The symposium will be May 11 in Demaray 150, 9:30-10:20 a.m. and 1:00-1:50 p.m. Please encourage students with potential interest in this project. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.

|Last Week to See “The Crucible"|
The SPU Theatre Department presents Arthur Miller's Tony Award-winning play, “The Crucible," February 2-4 in the E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Show times are 7:30 p.m. There will be matinee performance on February 4 at 2 p.m. The play is a gripping historical drama about a community in 1692 that ignites in accusations of witchcraft, hysteria, and retribution. It explores the struggle of one man with his conscience and his eventual purification. General admission tickets are $10, and $8 for students and senior citizens. Vision Press, the printer for SPU's stationery and business cards, will be closed February 20-24. Orders placed between 10 a.m. February 7 and 10 a.m. February 14 will be delayed one day. |February 1 Deadline for Summer Request at Camp Casey|
Full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff can submit a request for a summer stay at SPU's historical beach property, Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The early 20th century houses – once part of the coastal military fortress known as “Fort Casey" – are available for your personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes a weeklong rental of a house for you and your guests, access to the outdoor swimming pool, gym, beach, and other amenities at the conference center. To see photos, visit www.spu.edu/casey/. The deadline is February 1 for placing your online request for between June 13 and September 10, 2006. Please indicate five date choices on your request. Results will be available by February 28. Due to high demand and the way the “Casey Point system" works, it is unlikely for a faculty or staff person to be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. But it is good to submit a request every January to get yourself placed on the summer waiting list. If you are offered a spot, this is a wonderful opportunity for your family and friends to enjoy a memorable week in the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey. Collect rocks on the beach, fly a kite, dine out, shop, and explore Coupeville and Port Townsend, or relax by the heated swimming pool. “Peaches is my parents' cat. Since I have no pets at my own place, I count Peaches as my pet as well. He was given the name Peaches because mom and dad initially thought that he was a she. By the time the veterinarian gave my folks a quick lesson in kitty anatomy, the name had already stuck. Peaches does have a talent – mom and dad can usually get Peaches to “meow" on command. He'll do it about 75 percent of the time but, hey, it's still better than the number of tricks that most cats can perform (i.e. zero)." Jim Kim, undergraduate academic counselor.

|Hartje Writes About Universal Design|
Sandra Hartje, associate professor of family and consumer sciences, served as lead author on a chapter about universal design in housing in the text book Introduction to Housing, published by Prentice Hall in 2006. The text will be predominantly used in college housing classes throughout the United States. She also authored an article titled "Universal Design Features and Product Characteristics for Kitchens," which was published in the December 2005 edition of Housing and Society, the journal of the Housing Education and Research Association. This was a special issue on trends in kitchen and bath-design research.

|Fritzberg Talks About WASL in Seattle Times|
Associate Professor of Education Greg Fritzberg was quoted in a recent Seattle Times news story on the upcoming Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) test for high school sophomores. Fritzberg, SPU intern Peter Russo, and alum John Wright are running a WASL prep course for students at Chief Sealth High School in West Seattle. Fritzberg's partnership with Chief Sealth High School has also recently been discussed on KUOW's “Weekday" news program. Read The Seattle Times story online.
