OBP on Limited Schedule August 4

The Office of Business and Planning (OBP) will be operating on a skeletal crew Friday, August 4, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. due to the annual OBP summer event held off campus. The following offices will be closed. However, in an emergency, you may reach a staff member at the number given.

Mailing and Copying Services will operate only until 12:00 p.m. There will be a morning mail delivery and pick up. The bookstore will remain open during normal business hours. Safety and Security will be staffed to respond to emergencies.

Unusual Music Concert on July 25

The group “Chirgilchin," recent champions of the Tuvan national throat-singing competition, will perform on Tuesday, July 25, at 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. The group sings ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language and plays handmade instruments. Tuva is a small Russian province in the heart of Central Asia. Chirgilchin is known for their innovative new compositions with a jazzlike handling of the traditional vocal techniques and instrumentation. The music is produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creating a middle note and a haunting, flutelike harmonic. Tickets will be available at the door or are available through Tickets are $12 for students and SPU faculty and staff, and $16 for the general public. If SPU students, faculty, or staff purchase tickets online, the password is “miracle." The Fac/Staff Bulletin is published every other Monday during the summer. If you have information or event news, please send it as soon as possible to the Fac/Staff Bulletin editor (Tracy Norlen) at, or submit an item directly from the Fac/Staff Bulletin. The next deadline is Thursday, August 3. The next publication date is Monday, August 7.


Holmes Chapter on Estonian Food and Culture Published

Professor of Music Education Ramona Holmes had a section on Estonian food and culture published in The Ethnomusicologist's Cookbook: Complete Meals From Around the World, edited by Sean Williams and published by Routledge. Each chapter includes recipes for a full meal with regional proverbs, culture tips, and a list of appropriate CDs. Read the Estonian section to find out what it means when cabbage soup is served at a wedding.

Labrecque Publishes "Online Orientation Programs for New Students"

In the April edition of the Pacific Association of College Registrar's and Admissions Officers Writer's Group, Senior Academic Counselor Kristen Labrecque published an article titled "Online Orientation Programs for New Students." It highlights SPU's new student advising and registration's required "tutorial" for all new students. It requires students to access the Blackboard system, and prepares them for online learning at SPU before they register for classes. SPU is one of the only institutions requiring new students to "prepare" for advising and registration in such an intentional manner. SPU has seen great success with this approach. Fitch Named President-Elect for Regional Pre-Health Advisors

Associate Professor of Biology Cindy Fitch was named president-elect for the Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. Her election was announced while she attended the national meeting of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) held in Portland, Oregon, June 24-29. She will assume the presidency role after the next regional meeting in May 2007. The NAAHP organization is governed by regional boards and advisor groups as well by the National Board. Professor of Biology Ken Moore served as the national president of this organization in 2000. Cindy is the current premed and pre-health advisor at SPU.

Quek Presents Paper at 2006 IARR Conference

Karen Quek, assistant professor of marriage and family therapy, presented a paper titled "Reshaping Power Relationships: A Qualitative Study of Dual-Career Couples in Singapore" at the 2006 International Association for Relationship Conference, held in Crete, Greece, July 6 -10. This biennial conference represents an enriching cultural diversity of scholarship and research with participants representing 226 universities from 46 countries.

Gatlin and Steele Publish Article

Kenda Gatlin, associate registrar, and Chad Steele, Student Academic Services computer services manager, recently co-published an article in the Pacific Association of College Registrar's and Admissions Officers Writer's Group titled "Computer Service Managers: The IT Edge." It takes a look at staffing for technical assistance in functional areas, an issue most administrative areas grapple with in this era of dependence on automated and/or electronic work applications, and services. SPU's unique, innovative, and helpful model was shared with admissions, financial aid, registration, and enrollment leaders throughout the Pacific Association of Registrars and Admissions Officers. Nelson's Seaweed Research Highlighted in Whidbey News Times

A research project co-led by Professor of Biology Tim Nelson was highlighted in the July 12 issue of the Whidbey New Times. Tim and Western Washington University Professor Kathy Van Alstyne recently received a grant to study the causes and impacts of green algal blooms.


Sharpe Appointed Board Member of NACC

Laila Sharpe, assistant director of alumni and 1973 alumna, was recently appointed as a board member to the Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce (NACC). The NACC was founded in New York in 1915, and the Pacific Northwest chapter was founded in Seattle in 1969 – the third such chapter to be formed in the United States. NACC is committed to providing meaningful programs, events, and activities to promote economic and cultural relations between the United States and Norway. Born in Norway, Laila became a naturalized American citizen after she graduated from SPU in 1973. She is committed to sharing her cultural heritage as the advisor to the SPU Nordic Club, which she founded with her daughter Katrina in 2000. This student club has hundreds of members and enjoys the enrichment of diversity and cultural awareness through fun activities and events.
