Chapel: Annual John Perkins Lecture With John Perkins

The 2010 John Perkins Chapel on Tuesday, April 20, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church will feature Dr. John Perkins, president of the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Community Development and co-founder of SPU's John Perkins Center.

Earth Week at SPU

In celebration of Earth Week, SPU students, faculty, and staff have planned a series of events on campus to promote sustainability. The week features a series of activities in honor of International Earth Day on Thursday, April 22. The events are sponsored by the Office of Residence Life, Office of Facility and Project Management, Seattle Pacific Environmental Network (SPEN), Latreia, and Seattle Pacific Agriculture for the Community and Environment (SPEN). Exploring Darwin and Evolution in the 21st Century

Throughout the 2009–10 academic year, interdisciplinary teams of SPU faculty have presented quarterly symposia examining Charles Darwin's influence in a variety of fields, and exploring the application of contemporary theories of evolution. These events are sponsored by the School of Theology and the School of Psychology, Family, and Community.

Creation: Science and Christian Doctrine (Faculty Panel)
Tuesday, April 20, 1–2:30 p.m., Demaray Hall 150. Rick Steele (theology) speaks on “The Christian Doctrine of Creation and Scientific Theories of Origins." Patrick McDonald (philosophy) will respond.

American Religion After Darwin (Faculty Panel)
Thursday, April 22, 1–2:30 p.m., Demaray Hall 150. Doug Strong (theology) will speak on “Bibles, Bigots, and Biology: American Religion After Darwin." Tammy Van Dyken (history) will speak about “Monkey Business: Social Darwinism and the Rise of Fundamentalism in America." Randy Maddox, the William Kellon Quick professor of theology and Wesleyan studies at Duke Divinity School, will respond.

Social Venture Plan Competition April 21

The fourth annual Social Venture Plan Competition (SVPC) will hold its showcase competition on Wednesday, April 21, 2-6:15 p.m. in Weter Hall and Martin Square. This is the final round of this year's SVPC, and features 31 student teams pitching their ideas to faculty, staff, students and guest judges from the community. Cash prize winners will be announced at the end of the event, including a People's Choice award and a Grand Prize of $2,500. We encourage faculty and staff to stop by and see the work of our wonderful students.

Thursday Food for Thought With Karen Smith

This week's author in the Library's Spring Quarter “Thursday Food for Thought" is adjunct education faculty member Karen Smith, co-author of Winning the Math Wars: No Teacher Left Behind. Starting with the question “Why is it so difficult to reform mathematics education?" this in-depth observational research project — conducted at the Washington School Research Center and co-authored by Martin Abbott, Duane Baker, Karen Smith, and Tom Tryzna — offers insights about what's needed to marshal instructional energies away from ongoing conflicts and put them toward what will engage and support all students in learning mathematics. SPU Theatre Presents “Is He Dead?"

The Seattle Pacific University Theatre presents “Is He Dead?" adapted from a recently-discovered Mark Twain comedy written in 1898. After an impoverished French artist stages his own death to increase the value of his paintings, he then assumes the identity of his own twin sister, the widow Tillou. The story combines elements of social satire about fame, greed, and the value of art. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on April 22-24 and April 29-May 1, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on May 1. Estate-Planning Essentials: A How-to Seminar on April 27

WebMD: Don't Pass Up Your $75 Reward!

April 30 will be the final day for Premera-covered employees and their spouses to complete the WebMD Personal Health Assessment - HealthQuotient. Employees can receive a reward of $75. The more specific your answers, the more accurate your wellness score. If you have a preventive exam or routine physical scheduled, consider requesting your blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, components of cholesterol (HDL and LDL) and body mass index (BMI) for the most accurate wellness score. Biblical and Theological Education Grants – Apply by May 15

The Center for Biblical and Theological Education (CBTE) provides grants to empower eligible faculty and staff to receive and conduct biblical and theological education (BTE), to explore BTE's intersections with specific academic disciplines, and to enable related consultations. Faculty or academic units may examine how the biblical text and broader theological implications affect or may be applied to their discipline, curriculum, or research. Mentoring Collegium Sponsored by the Center for Biblical and Theological Education

Faculty and staff are invited to this free lunch and introductory discussion, led by Associate Professor of Christian Ministry Jeffrey Keuss and Director of the Center for Biblical and Theological Education (CBTE) Celeste Cranston on Thursday, May 20, 12:30–2 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. The event will explore the development of mentoring relationships. The Latest From Campus Dining

The winner of Pura Vida's Next Top Barista this round is sophomore and elementary education major, Kirsten Jones. Her drink recipe is “The Butterscotch Temptation." Also, Earth Day is this Thursday, and Campus Dining encourages you to support the sustainability efforts of Naked Juice and Sun Chips. By the end of 2010, Naked Juice will convert all of its packaging to renewable bottles that are 100 percent recyclable. This effort is the equivalent of 57,000 barrels of oil! Also, Sun Chips will soon be releasing their fully compostable, biodegradable packaging.

Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship by April 20

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2010–11 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate him or her for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant, and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. “This is Maddie (on the left), our 8 year old yellow lab, along with her best buddy and our other lab, Riley. We adopted Maddie from Guide Dogs for the Blind when she was almost 2. She's a ‘career change' (meaning she didn't make it through training), because she was hesitant to ride on escalators. She is the most well-trained, hilarious, affectionate lab we've ever had.
