Free Methodist Bible Quizzers on Campus

From June 25-30, SPU will host the 2012 Free Methodist Bible Quiz Finals. Bible Quizzing is a ministry of the Free Methodist Church that seeks to establish youth in their faith through systematic study, application, and memorization of Scripture. Students in grades 6-12 have spent the past year studying the Bible and competing locally and regionally. Their hard work will culminate in this final competition on SPU's campus. More than 500 people will stay on campus and utilize SPU facilities for this competition. In addition, the Undergraduate Admissions office will coordinate a variety of evening activities for these visitors, including an on-campus carnival and a trip to Gasworks Park. Follow the Summer SPRINT Teams

This summer, more than 40 SPU students will learn and serve in communities around the globe as they participate in a SPRINT trip. Students will be in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, and Vietnam. SPRINT participants will step out of their comfort zones, experience and encounter God, learn from the faith and example of others, and engage in models of reconciliation and community development that demonstrate the wholeness of the Gospel. Each team has a blog page where they will update family and friends. Visit the SPRINT website for pictures and stories from each team. More

Need More Than $2,500 in Your Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?

If you are satisfied with your previous health care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) election made during the normal May Open Enrollment and would not be increasing this election, then this notice does not apply to you. But if you want to increase your election, you have a very limited time period in which to modify it for the upcoming planning year of 7/1/2012–6/30/2012, with a two-month grace period. This is the result of a last-minute change received from the IRS regarding health care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). Despite the short notice, we felt that those who had only been able to select the new $2,500 limit (rather than the former $6,000 limit) might want to take advantage of this. The lower limit will now be in effect starting July 1, 2013, in accordance with health care reform. To increase your limit or establish a new limit, please print, complete, sign, and deliver this form by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 29. The form may not be received after this date. Select the link to access the form. More

Important Information About Flex Spending Benefits Cards

Our flexible spending administrator, BAC, provided new information for those who currently hold Benefits cards. If you have a Benefits card for health care flexible spending accounts related to the year 2011-12, and if you did not elect new funds for the 2012-13 planning year, your Benefits card will remain active until the end of the grace period (8/31/12). If, however, you did elect new funds, your reimbursable purchases made on the card between 7/1/12 and 8/31/12 will be deducted first from any balance you might have remaining from your 2011-12 planning year, and then from your 2012-13 new election. Questions may be directed to Human Resources Associate Director Carrie McCrimmon at or 206-281-2676.

Pet Photos of the Week

Editor's Note: Due to technical difficulties in the June 11 Fac/Staff Bulletin, we're re-running this “Pet Photo of the Week" feature.

“These three get along most of the time, but not usually this well. When it happens, you take pictures! Joining Dublin Kells and Guinness St James Gate is our newest member, Londonderry Donegal (Derry). She's the white and tan one and is 3 years old. Dublin is 6 and Guinness turns 6 in September. On May 24, Derry gave birth to two boys; Kilronin and Kilkenny. We now have 5! Both boys are good eaters and have doubled their weight in less than a week. They have crawled out of bed and made it critical that we puppy-proof our house! When we told my father we were keeping them, he said ‘You're going to have five?' My response was ‘You had five kids and had to pay for college and weddings, I only have to pay for puppy obedience school!'" Ruth Adams, University Registrar. Select the link to see a larger picture. Fritzberg Receives Education Grant

The School of Education is pleased to announce that Professor of Education Greg Fritzberg has successfully partnered with 12 Seattle Public Schools in obtaining a total of $310,000 in Family and Education grants. These grants will be devoted to classroom assistance and tutoring next year and are renewable for up to seven years. Eleven of the 12 schools are in Seattle's southend and central area. The money will translate into 50-75 part-time jobs for SPU students, depending on how many hours each tutor works in a uniquely scheduled situation that matches his/her SPU course schedule. The grants will be funneled through University Tutors for Seattle Students, which is a nonprofit entity that Greg has created for this purpose. Congratulations!
