Perkins Headlines President's Symposium, Day of Common Learning

Dr. John Perkins, renowned civil rights leader and founder of Mississippi-based Mendenhall Ministries, will be the keynote speaker at the President's Symposium on Reconciliation on Wednesday, October 20, at 10 a.m. in Brougham Pavilion. The Symposium is part of SPU's annual “Day of Common Learning." The theme for the day is “Reconciliation: Building Bridges Through Community Development." During this special event, faculty, staff, and students will center their learning on the topics of reconciliation. Classes will be cancelled until 3 p.m. and campus offices will be closed in the morning. For more information, visit the Day of Common Learning Web site. More




SPU Launches Perkins Center for Reconciliation

SPU will officially open the John Perkins Center for Reconciliation, Leadership Training, and Community Development on Wednesday, October 20. The Center is a first-of-its-kind partnership between SPU and Dr. John Perkins, renowned civil rights leader and founder of Mississippi-based Mendenhall Ministries. He will travel to Seattle to participate in the opening ceremony. “John Perkins is one of the great, evangelical voices coming out of the civil rights movement in Mississippi," says SPU President Philip Eaton. “His experiences have been hard, sometimes violent and tragic, and yet he communicates a joyous vision for reconciliation and community development that is shaped so powerfully by the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We have much to learn from John, and we are deeply honored to bring his name and something of his legacy onto our campus."




Faculty, Staff Invited to the Young Alumni Dinner

The SPU Young Alumni Council's "Beyond Nickerson" Endowment Dinner is Thursday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. You don't need to be a SPU alum to come–all are welcome. We'll award our first scholarship to an undergraduate student who is "engaging the culture and changing the world" by going beyond SPU to reach the community. The speaker is President Philip Eaton along with keynote speaker Jeff Van Duzer, dean of the School of Business and Economics. Music will be provided by a fantastic young alum jazz trio, appropriately named the "Nickerson St. Jazz Trio." It will be a great night of seeing old friends and meeting new ones. More

Italy Trip With Art History Adjunct Professor

Susan Haas, adjunct professor of art, will lead a 15-day "Passage to Italy" tour, July 11-25, 2005, for students and adults. Destinations will include London, Paris, Versailles, Venice, Padua, Florence, Siena, and Rome. ACIS (American Council for International Study) will facilitate the trip. Participants may make alternate return flights with ACIS if they wish to extend their stay. A $95 deposit by December 6 will hold your space and lock in current trip package prices, which include roundtrip airfare from Seattle, quality hotels, two meals per day, all ground transportation, entrance fees to sites, and a guide. Students may earn three to five optional credits for the tour, along with related written assignments, by registering for Art 4920: Readings in Art, under Professor Roger Feldman. How to Submit Items to the SPU Master Calendar

All university sponsored events and activities, including those off campus, should be included on the SPU Master Calendar. A representative of the event should submit items AFTER the event is approved and the primary details are finalized. All items are reviewed before posting. SPU students, faculty and staff may submit items to post on the calendar via the Banner Information System. Tell Your Teenagers About the Christian College Fair

Please tell your friends and family about the National Christian College Fair, coming to the Fine Center at First Free Methodist Church on Thursday, October 21, from 6-9 p.m. More than 45 Christian colleges and universities from the United States and Canada will be represented. Two scholarship and financial aid sessions will also be offered. For a list of which schools will be represented at the Seattle fair, visit the Web site. More




Art Sale to Benefit Track, Cross Country Team

The SPU Track and Cross Country teams are selling art prints to raise money for their travel budget. Pay only $1-$5 for prints worth up to $50. The sale takes place October 14 and 15 in Weter Lounge from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.




Volleyball Doubleheader This Weekend

The SPU women's volleyball team plays back-to-back games this weekend. On Friday, October 15, the Falcons face Saint Martin's and then take on Central Washington University on Saturday, October 16. As of July 1, 2004, Business and Facility Services was renamed “Facilities and Planning" and is listed accordingly in the new Faculty Staff Directory. Plant Services is now “Building Maintenance."




Tickets on Sale Now for Christmas Concert

Begin the Advent season with the annual “Sacred Sounds of Christmas" concert on Sunday, November 28, at 4 p.m. in Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony. SPU's acclaimed Concert Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and other groups will perform sacred and traditional Christmas music during this memorable evening. Tickets are $15 and $18 and on sale now by calling Ticketmaster at (206) 292-ARTS, or visiting the Web site at www.ticketmaster.com. You can also buy tickets in person (cash and checks only) at the Benaroya Hall Box Office at Third Avenue and Union Street in downtown Seattle.

SUB Fireside Room Becomes Pacific Collegium

Did you know that almost 40 percent of our students commute to campus? In preparation for an exciting new program to focus on this population, the Student Union Building Fireside Room is under construction. We expect the Commuter Collegium to open mid-Autumn Quarter. It will provide the "home away from home" atmosphere that so many students desire. Membership to the Pacific Collegium at SPU will be limited by applications accepted in the fall. Please note: For activities that have utilized the SUB Fireside Room in the past, alternate arrangements will need to be made. Thank you for your flexibility. Orientation for New Student Employees October 15

The offices of Student Employment and Student Payroll will be conducting "New Student Employee Orientations" on the Fridays in October at 3 p.m in Weter Hall 202. The last Friday is October 15. Topics covered include Office of Student Employment services, student employee paperwork, work-study vs. non-work study employment, the Student Employee handbook, and electronic payroll procedures. The session will be approximately 45 minutes. Students who attend should be paid for this time. Greg Wolfe's Essay in The Best of Catholic Writing

An essay by Greg Wolfe titled "Please Touch," originally published in Image, has been included in The Best Catholic Writing 2004. The book, edited by Brian Doyle and published by Loyola Press, received a starred review in Publishers Weekly. Other contributors to the volume include Kathleen Norris, Alice McDermott, Paul Elie, and Paul Mariani. Greg is SPU's writer-in-residence and director of the M.F.A. program in creative writing.




Suzanne Wolfe's Novel Named to Top 10

The American Library Association's Booklist magazine has named Suzanne Wolfe's novel Unveiling to its "Top 10 Christian Novels" of the year list. The commendation praises the novel as a "Jamesian-like tale." Unveiling has received outstanding reviews in a number of publications, including Books and Culture, America, Christianity Today, and a number of online journals. Suzanne is an instructor of English.
