Do You Know an Outstanding Senior?

“This is my annual request for names of SPU's outstanding seniors from this year's graduating class. These students and their achievements will be pitched to local media outlets and highlighted on the SPU home page. Please send me the name(s) and two or three sentences as to why the student is outstanding. (I need more information than "top student in class.") Examples would be students who overcame obstacles to graduate, involved in community service projects or innovative research, started a new venture, took a class that changed their career direction, or did something really interesting for a graduating senior. Basically, anything that will make a good story! I will then follow up with the student and get permission to use their profile. Autumn Quarter Registration

Registration for Autumn Quarter is coming soon! All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time. Autumn registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, May 15. Autumn registration for graduate students begins Monday, May 22. Do You Need a Passport? Need to Renew?

If you need a passport, or need to renew a passport, don't miss the United States Post Service's (USPS) “Passport Fair," April 25-26, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the SUB. USPS can process passport forms and take pictures. To ease the process, the Career Development Center will have applications and renewal forms to fill out prior to your visit. To be prepared, bring your checkbook, proof of citizenship (birth certificate), and proof of identity (driver's license or government ID). Seminary Fair for Students

Are you aware of students interested in seminary education or considering a call to ministry? Encourage them to attend Seminary Fair 2006, Wednesday, April 26, 1-5 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Representatives from 19 seminaries and divinity schools from around the country will be available to answer questions. Seminary Fair 2006 is sponsored by Theology Student Union.




Islam, Immigration, and France

Associate Professor of French Michelle Beauclair and Professor of History Don Holsinger will discuss the history of cultural encounters between France and its Islamic immigrants, including the November 2005 riots, during a special forum on Thursday, April 27, at 1 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. A discussion will follow. This event is sponsored by the SPU History Club.




Celebrate May Day with the Hawaii Club

Last Week to See Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night"

The SPU Theatre Department presents one of Shakespeare's greatest comedies, “Twelfth Night," April 27-29, in the E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a matinee performance on April 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission, and $8 for students and seniors. Global Engagement Forum, April 28-29

Register now for the 2006 Global Leadership Forum titled “Evangelism and the Persecuted Church," April 28-29, on the SPU campus. Speakers include Jayakumar Christian, national director of World Vision India; Paul Freston, professor of sociology at Calvin College and author of Evangelicals and Politics in Asia, Africa and Latin America; Lamin Sanneh, D. Willis James professor of missions and world Christianity at Yale University and author of Whose Religion Is Christianity?; and Priscilla Pope-Levison, SPU professor of theological studies and author of Turn the Pulpit Loose: Two Centuries of American Women Evangelists. Faculty pre-registration is $15 at www.globalengage.org/store. Same-day registration is $25. A continental breakfast and light lunch on Saturday are included.

Historian David McCullough Comes to Seattle

David McCullough, historian and best-selling author of such books as 1776 and John Adams, is the featured speaker for SPU's annual Downtown Business Breakfast on Tuesday, April 25. This year's invitation-only event is expected to draw 1,200 business and community leaders. McCullough, two-time Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, will also speak on campus at 1 p.m. the same day. This lecture is free and open to the public.




Nominations for Leadership Awards

Please consider nominating an individual or group that has shared something extraordinary with our campus this year. Forms can be picked up at the Student Programs front desk or an electronic copy can be requested by emailing lynnva@spu.edu. Nomination forms need to be returned to the Student Programs front desk by May 1 to be considered. Nomination categories include Student Scholar of the Year; Student Group of the Year; Student Organization Advisor of the Year; Student Event of the Year: Service Orientated Program; Student Event of the Year: Educational; and Student Event of the Year: Entertainment. Please note, nominations cannot be submitted for events that have not yet taken place.

Ward's Presentation Selected for Webinar

A live presentation by Associate Vice President for Information and Data Management Janet Ward was included in a Webinar offered by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers at their annual meeting last week in San Diego, California. Janet's presentation was titled “Forecasting Enrollment: Clear Skies, High in the Mid-to-Lower 70s."




Hartje Presents at International Conference on Aging, Disability, and Independence

Sandra Hartje, associate professor of interior design and housing, recently gave two presentations at the International Conference on Aging, Disability, and Independence in St. Petersburg, Florida. The first presentation was titled “Essential and Advanced Design Features for Universal Design in New Single-Family Housing." The second presentation was titled “Lessons Learned From a Universal Design Class Project."

Mindy Gets Married!

Administrative Assistant to the President Mindy Sue Galbreath and SPU alumna '00 married another SPU alum, Matthew James Worthington '94, on Saturday, March 18, at First Free Methodist Church. Matt is a financial consultant for A.G. Edwards in Kirkland. Matt's dad, Jim Worthington, was dean of SPU's School of Education for 19 years. Congratulations, Mindy and Matt!




Husby Finishes Boston Marathon

Kari Husby, administrative assistant to the controller in the Finance Office, ran in the Boston Marathon last week with a time of 3:48. She finished in the top 40 percent of all women who raced. Congratulations, Kari!




Women's Soccer Team Honored by Mariners

Members of the SPU women's soccer team will be honored Tuesday, April 25, during pre-game festivities at the Seattle Mariners baseball game at Safeco Field. Head coach Chuck Sekyra will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the start of the 7:05 p.m. game. The Falcons were runner-ups in the NCAA Division II tournament, finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the nation. Congratulations!
