|“Thursday Food for Thought" – George Scranton and Dynamic Scripture|
On November 20, SPU Professor of Theatre George Scranton presents “Rereading the Bible Again (for the First Time)," an introduction to the art of reading Scripture aloud through his orchestrations for speech choir. Come learn more at “Thursday Food for Thought," a brown-bag lunch event held in the Library Reading Room, 12:30–1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time will follow, and audience participation is welcome. |Undergraduate Academic Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments|
The undergraduate academic counselors in Student Academic Services will be available to meet with students on a first-come, first-served basis on Thursday, November 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, November 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These brief meetings are intended for students who have Winter Quarter 2009 scheduling and registration issues, or who are on academic probation. Students should have already met with their faculty advisor, as these meetings do not result in the removal of the faculty advisor hold. Students may check in at the front desk of the Undergraduate Admissions and Academic Counseling Office in Demaray Hall 120.
|Stories of Thanksgiving|
We invite you to share your story with us at this year's Thanksgiving Chapel. Please submit your written narrative (500-700 words) about an experience for which you are thankful. Three stories, one from a student, faculty, and staff member, will be selected to be read during the Thanksgiving Chapel. Emailed submissions will be accepted until Wednesday, November 19, by University Ministries Administrative Assistant Julie Glavic at firstname.lastname@example.org. An offering for the Campus Benevolence Fund will be taken at the Thanksgiving Chapel. The fund provides emergency assistance to students and other members of our community. Please consider bringing donations for this community resource.
|SPU's Library Summit Borrowing Services Changes|
The SPU Library's Summit borrowing service will change software December 1. It will
be complicated for all 34 Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries to close out one system and move to a new system at the end of Autumn Quarter. Because the renewal feature is not yet ready, the Orbis Cascade Alliance library directors recently voted to extend the loan period for Summit books from four to six weeks. Here are some dates of importance for this transition to the new software.
November 20–December 1. The due date for Summit books checked out between November 20 and December 1 is December 12, 2008.
December 1. This is the first day you can request items using the new Summit software. Requests placed using the new software will be due six weeks from check out and cannot be renewed.
December 1–12. Please return any Summit books you are no longer using before December 12. All the libraries of the Orbis Cascade Alliance expect an avalanche of books being turned in on December 12.
December 12. All Summit books checked out on the “old" system will be due.
|John Perkins Center Presents “Lumpers and Splitters: Racialist Thought in Early American Science"|
University of Washington Associate Professor of History Bruce Hevly is the special guest for the John Perkins Center Forum on Thursday, November 20, at 1 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The history of science in British North America and the early United States may be studied with questions of broader significance in mind. For example: “Who counts as an American?" – a question intertwined with scientific and political meanings, and “How are political questions elided by recasting them as scientific questions?" This presentation draws on examples from Thomas Jefferson's “Notes on the State of Virginia" (1785), and from other racial science episodes before 1850 to argue that the taxonomic question of lumping versus splitting can be used to organize our thinking about such broad questions in the context of an undergraduate survey course. |Winter Registration Begins Nov. 17|
Registration for Winter Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will want to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time. Winter registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, November 17. Winter registration for graduate students begins Monday, November 24. |Edward J. and Elaine C. Underhill Scholarship Endowment|
SPU is pleased to announce the establishment of the Edward J. and Elaine C. Underhill Scholarship Endowment. Both Edward and Elaine recognize the value of Christian higher education and its positive influence on students' lives. Edward has been a pastor for many years, and Elaine grew up near Seattle Pacific. They desire to assist Seattle Pacific in accomplishing its mission of engaging the culture and changing the world. The couple has established this endowment fund to be held in perpetuity to provide scholarships for undergraduate students who are children of missionaries.
|SPU Theatre Presents “The Alto Part"|
SPU's Theatre Department presents “The Alto Part" November 20-22. The production revolves around a mother and daughter who fight for singing careers while dealing with a cantankerous landlady and a tough-talking aunt. The play begins at 7:30 p.m. at the E.E. Bach Theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, November 22. Tickets are $12 for general admission, and $10 for students and seniors. Children under age 5 are not admitted. |PTEC Northwest Conference Sessions Available on iTunes U|
The Physics Teacher Education Coalition, Northwest Conference, was held at SPU on October 10. PTEC is a network of more than 100 institutions committed to improving the education of future physics and physical science teachers. It is part of the PhysTEC project, which is led by the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the American Institute of Physics. The conference was an opportunity for members of the physics education community in the Pacific Northwest to attend presentations by national leaders in physics teacher preparation. |The Sacred Sounds of Christmas: November 30, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.|
Begin the Advent season with SPU's ninth annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert Sunday, November 30, in Benaroya Hall. Featuring SPU's nationally acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and other groups, this stirring performance of music and narrative tells the story of God's promise of a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Jesus. This year, by popular demand, a second performance was added, however, the 4 p.m. concert is now sold out. “This is my mini dachshund, Gigi. We just celebrated her 5th birthday last month. She is a total princess. She loves to sit on your lap all day if you don't push her away. She loves being dressed up (not really, but will tolerate if you promised her treats afterward). And, of course, she loves to eat. Her absolute favorite activity is agility (obstacle course). We train every week and occasionally attend trials and compete against other canines." |Feldman Participates in Art Conferences|
Professor of Art Roger Feldman was a panelist for a conference held in New York with the New York Center for Art and Media Studies (NYCAMS) called "Educating Artists of Faith for the 21st Century." He responded to comments made by Bethel College President Jay Barnes and Bethel College Art Department Chairman Wayne Roosa. The panel addressed challenges of art departments at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities institutions, including being a scholar and artist or art historian, opportunities and resources, and opportunities for collaborations. The conference was November 6-9. In early October, Roger was a guest artist/facilitator at Laity Lodge outside of San Antonio, Texas. His role was to facilitate conversations and visual presentations among visual artists in discussing their work, obstacles, and common ground as professional artists in the 21st century. Approximately 80 artists, musicians, playwrights, and poets were in attendance.
|Trzyna's Paintings on Display|
Professor of English Tom Trzyna's multi-media paintings were displayed at the Hospitality Conference sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, November 13-15. The paintings are usually on display in his office.
|Surdyk Presents at Christian Business Faculty Association Conference|
Associate Professor of Economics Lisa Surdyk presented a paper titled "Businesses doing what they can with what they have where they are to address poverty in America: Examples from the Business Ethics Top 100" at the 2008 Christian Business Faculty Association conference. The conference, hosted by Anderson University, was held in Indianapolis, November 6-8.
|Thorpe Book Readings, Essay|
Professor of English Doug Thorpe recently gave a series of readings and lectures from his book Rapture of the Deep: Reflections on the Wild in Art, Wilderness and the Sacred at Wabash College and St. Mary's College, both in Indiana. His essay, “A Just Measure," appears in the current edition of Parabola magazine. Some of this material was previewed in Doug's contribution to the recent Day of Common Learning.
|Woodward's Recent Presentations|
Over the last several months, Professor of History Bill Woodward has given presentations to a variety of academic and community groups. He presented a work in progress to the Northwest chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (May), preached twice in Puget Sound churches (May and June), and was a seminar speaker at California's Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center (July). In August, he presented the “History of Baseball" to residents of Columbia Lutheran Home on Phinney Ridge, and in September he explained the origin of U.S. independence to a local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Most recently, he gave an invited illustrated talk on Pacific Northwest history to the national meeting of chief academic officers from member schools of the Council on Independent Colleges (November 2), and put on an all-day workshop on the American Revolution for Yakima Valley middle-school teachers (November 5).
