|Thursday Food for Thought: Robert Clark|
"Thursday Food for Thought," sponsored by the SPU Library, is a series of events featuring faculty and staff authors reading from their work. The readings take place Thursdays, 12:30-1:15 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. A question-and-answer time follows each reading. Audience members are encouraged to eat their lunch while they listen. The Autumn Quarter “Thursday Food for Thought" begins October 15 with Robert Clark. An instructor in SPU's MFA in Creative Writing program, Clark will read from his acclaimed new book Dark Water: Art, Disaster, and Redemption in Florence. In the book, this local author chronicles the 1966 flood in Florence, Italy, via both history and personal memoir. In exploring the international efforts of art lovers to save the Renaissance art threatened by the rising waters, Clark also examines how and why we value art both aesthetically and spiritually. Clark is also the author of three other books of nonfiction and four novels, including Lives of the Artists, Love Among the Ruins, Mr. White's Confession (which won the Edgar Award), and In the Deep Midwinter. A memoir, My Grandfather's House: A Geneology of Doubt and Faith, was published in 1999. He is a Guggenheim Fellow working on a collection of essays on art and belief. |Faculty, Staff Invited to Donate to Date Auction 2009|
Date Auction is an annual event put together by the Student Union Board (STUB) to raise money by auctioning entertaining packages for students to experience with friends. This year's Date Auction is Friday, October 30, with all proceeds being donated to SPRINT as well as to Village Volunteers, a local nonprofit that works in partnership with rural villages in Kenya, India, Ghana, and Nepal to promote self-sufficiency in villages by providing economic and educational opportunities for young girls. STUB would like to invite faculty and staff to donate desserts for the Dessert Auction portion of the event, or to donate any items of interest to the packages. Donations could be extra tickets to sports or theatre events. A great example of a package donation is one by Associate Vice President of Student Life Jeff Jordan, who has donated an incredible Superbowl Party at his home! |National Eating Disorders Awareness Week Looking for Volunteers|
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a collective effort of volunteers, eating disorder professionals, health care providers, educators, social workers, and students committed to raising awareness of the dangers surrounding eating disorders, and the need for early intervention and treatment. If you are interested in helping plan events for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February 22–26, 2010), join us for our first planning meeting on Thursday, October 22, at 1 p.m. at the Student Counseling Center. |Help Promote the Greater Seattle National Christian College Fair|
SPU is helping host the Greater Seattle National Christian College fair at Bellevue Christian High School on October 20. The fair will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and is a great event for college bound students and their parents. |Pianist Paul Barnes on October 14|
Emmy award-winning concert pianist Paul Barnes will perform Wednesday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre. The concert will include works by Samuel Barber, Joseph Haydn, and Philip Glass. Also featured is a new work by Victoria Bond based on a Byzantine and Greek Orthodox chant melody. Barnes performs an eclectic mix of contemporary and classical music that appeal to audiences of every persuasion. His concert is part of the SPU's Schoenhals Symposium and the Day of Common Learning. An on-campus Weight Watchers group is forming for Autumn Quarter. A starting date
is yet to be established, as the group needs 15 people interested in order to schedule an informational meeting. SPU has had an on-campus Weight Watchers group for the past seven years, and it has been a terrific program for successful weight loss and good health. |Medical Deductibles and Out-of-Pocket Maximums Reset January|
Both of SPU's medical PPO plans, Option 1 and Option 2, now have deductibles for in-network and out-of-network usage. Deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums are based on the calendar year, so they reset every January. The good news is that if you have to pay deductibles October through December, those amounts will apply to your deductible for 2010. Remember, the deductible only has to be met before the plan “kicks in" under certain services. Most in-network doctor's office visits and your preventive care visits do not require a deductible. However, you should refer to the summary highlights for your medical plan option (Option 1 or Option 2) to see which services require you to first meet your deductible. More

“This is our quirky corgi Pembroke, Corky. We adopted him last year at the age of 4. When we first brought him home, we tried to change his name to ‘Marty' or ‘Scotty' as Corky just makes him sound like a goofy dog. But through this we found out that, (1) he really is a smart dog that you cannot trick, and (2) his name suits him. He is always doing unpredictable, funny things that bring my wife, Sarah, and I joy after our days at work and school. As for the picture, we had heard that some dogs need a backpack when they go on walks to feel confident. Obviously, Corky doesn't see the benefits of this." |Rehberg Named Treasurer of IAEDP|
Sara Rehberg, Student Counseling Center eating disorder specialist, was appointed to serve as treasurer for the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) Puget Sound Washington chapter for 2009-11. Established in 1985, the IAEDP is well recognized for its excellence in providing first-quality education and high-level training standards to an international multidisciplinary group of various healthcare treatment providers, and helping professions who treat the full spectrum of eating disorder problems.
|Daniels, Diddams, and Van Duzer Present at Academy of Management|
Professor of Management Denise Daniels, Professor of Industrial/Organizational
Psychology and co-chair of Psychology Margaret Diddams, and School of Business and
Economics Dean Jeff Van Duzer presented their paper titled "A Magnetic Pull on the
Internal Compass: The Effects of Moral Self on Ethical Sensitivity" at the annual
Academy of Management meeting held in Chicago in early August. Margaret also
presented a paper titled "Hubris or Humility: Cautions Surrounding the Construct
and Self-Definition of Authentic Leadership" which was co-authored by her doctoral
student Glenna Chang and selected for inclusion in the “Best Paper Proceedings," a distinction given to 20 percent of the 1,900 papers presented at the conference.
|Ferreiro's Essays Published|
Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro has published two interpretative essays in Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage, on “Egeria" (a fourth-century woman pilgrim), and the veneration of “St. Martin of Tours in Iberia."
