President's Spring Forum May 11

The annual President's Spring Forum honoring faculty and staff is Tuesday, May 11, 9:30 a.m., in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Offices will be closed during that time so everyone can attend.

Sri Lanka Displacement Camp Exhibit

An exhibit based on life in a Sri Lanka Civil War displacement camp during will be on campus May 11–14 in Weter Hall Lounge. The exhibit was produced by World Concern, and created by SPU student interns Nicole Soulia, Blair Hensen, Mallory Spanjer, and Zach Brenneman. The walk-through display begins with the entrance enclosed by a tarp door to stimulate the effect of walking into a tent inside the displacement camps. The walk-through takes between 10–20 minutes to view, as the material and imagery provides reflection and education. The display contains drawings and stories made by students living in the camps, depicting their lives before and during the war. You'll see photos of people, a history of the war, a video about the conflict, and items from the camps. The display is designed to give a picture of what it would have been like to be forced out of your home with family members dead or missing, run onto battlefields, and then placed into crowded camps with thousands of strangers. The event is sponsored by the Political Science and Geography departments.

Thursday Food for Thought With Tom Trzyna

This week's guest author in the Library's Spring Quarter “Thursday Food for Thought" is Professor of English Tom Trzyna. Tom, who also serves as a consultant to Arabian universities, reads from his new novel, Meeting God, and talks about the journey that led from Paris to the Sultanate of Oman. The event takes place May 13, 12:30–1:15 p.m. in the Library Reading Room on the main floor of the library. You are encouraged to bring your lunch. A question-and-answer time will follow. More

Jazz Ensemble Concert May 13

A concert by the Jazz Ensemble will be held Thursday, May 13, 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre inside of SPU's McKinley Hall. The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.

Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference May 14

The annual Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference is Friday, May 14, 3–9 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall. The conference will showcase the outstanding research contributions from students in the fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics. The keynote speaker, Douglas Diekema, M.D., M.P.H., is from the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle. His topic is “The Case of Vaccine Refusal: Medical Science, Parental Conviction, Child Welfare, and Community Good." All events are free and open to the public. Wind Symphony Concert

The Wind Symphony's next concert on Friday, May 14, includes Charles Ives' “Variations on America," Rick Kirby's “An American Fanfare," and Edvard Grieg's “Piano Concerto in A Minor" performed by junior Jonathan Bletscher. The evening will also feature SPU's Flute Choir. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church, and is free and wheelchair accessible.

Night of Beats

Mosaic, a student club celebrating culture and diversity at SPU, present the eighth annual hip hop event, “Night of Beats," on Friday, May 14, 8–11 p.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion.

Image Journal Honors Ron Hanson

Join Image journal and acclaimed writer Ron Hansen for the 2010 Denise Levertov Award lecture and reading on Thursday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mars Hill Graduate School of Theology. Hansen, a contributor to Image, is the author of Mariette in Ecstasy, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Hitler's Niece, Atticus, Exiles, and editor of several anthologies of contemporary short stories. He teaches literature, film, and creative writing at Santa Clara University, and serves as a permanent deacon for the Diocese of San Jose. This event is free and open to the public. Biblical and Theological Education Grants – Apply by May 15

The Center for Biblical and Theological Education (CBTE) provides grants to empower eligible faculty and staff to receive and conduct biblical and theological education (BTE), to explore BTE's intersections with specific academic disciplines, and to enable related consultations. Faculty or academic units may examine how the biblical text and broader theological implications affect or may be applied to their discipline, curriculum, or research. Pet Photo of the Week

“This is Zooey, who prefers PBS nature documentaries above all else. Her favorite show is the one about polar bears. We rescued Zooey from PAWS about a year and a half ago. We've owned a lot of cats, but Zooey is one of a kind. She watches everything we do, however mundane, with a look of wide-eyed astonishment, as if human behavior is the world's most bewildering mystery. If she wore a t-shirt, it would say, "I CANNOT BELIEVE MY EYES!" She's an exceedingly gentle cat who tiptoes everywhere, except between the hours of 8 and 9, when she turns into a psycho-ninja cat, charging around the house and literally bouncing off the walls. Vokos Honored as Science Education Advocate

Professor of Physics Stamatis Vokos has been named a “Science Education Advocate" by the Washington state Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER). The annual awards go to individuals or organizations who exhibit outstanding advocacy for science education in Washington state. Washington's LASER is a partnership program that started in 1999 with the National Science Resources Center, the Washington state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Pacific Science Center, and educational service and lead school districts from across Washington state. The program is part of the National Science Resources Center's LASER Center, funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The five awardees receive $5,000 each to be awarded to a not-for-profit organization or public education entity of their choice for use in its efforts on behalf of science education. The monetary reward as well as funding for the awards process was generously provided by The Boeing Company. The winners were honored at a special luncheon on May 3. Congratulations, Professor Vokos!

Ediger, Woodward Give Workshops

Upper Yakima Valley social studies teachers, under a U.S. Department of Education grant, deepened their content mastery in workshops led by historians from universities from around the state. This year's high school series concluded May 5, as it began last fall, with presentations by Associate Professor of Political Science Ruth Ediger (“Women 1950–2000" and “Civil Rights 1950–2000"), and Professor of History Bill Woodward (“Industrialization and Its Discontents"). One teacher said after the day's activities, “I always tell my students about the incredible lectures during the duration of this grant, and Dr. Woodward and Dr. Ediger are at the top. I hope that one day one of my former students will be able to compliment you, in person, at SPU." Ruth and Bill, from the only university whose historians are asked to appear more than once, are already contracted for two workshops each next year.

Newby Composition Debuts

“Our Enduring Spirit" by Associate Professor of Music Stephen Michael Newby will be performed by the University of Washington Wind Ensemble on May 27 and June 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Meany Hall on the UW campus. The work was commissioned as part of the UW's “Ruah: Wind and Spirit" concert. Visit the website for more information. More

Snedker Presents Paper

Karen Snedker, assistant professor of sociology, presented a paper titled “Neighborhood Effects on Adolescent Health and Risk Behaviors" at a session on “Multilevel Models of Health" at the Population Association of America (PAA) annual meeting in April. This paper is in collaboration with Jerald Herting and Emily Walton at the University of Washington.

Ferreiro's Articles Published

Two articles by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro, "Fray Luís de León" and "John of Damascus," were published in the Encyclopedia of Christian Literature. Scarecrow Press, 2010, pp. 282-283 and 392-393. Fray Luis is one of the most distinguished luminaries in the nearly 800 years of the University of Salamanca. His most famous work is the “Names of Christ," a masterpiece of Golden Age literature and a profound set of 13 meditations on the names of Christ in Scripture. John of Damascus, the “last" of the Greek church fathers, wrote a defense of icons against iconoclasts, which is still unsurpassed in its apologetic.
