|Sacred Sounds Early-Bird Tickets on Sale|
Begin the Advent season with the annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert in Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony. This year offers two concerts: Monday, November 29, and Tuesday, November 30, both at 7:30 p.m. Sacred Sounds features SPU's nationally renowned Concert Choir and Wind Symphony, along with other acclaimed SPU performing groups. |Workshop to Help Students Find Federal Jobs|
Faculty and staff are invited to attend a free workshop on how to assist students in finding federal jobs. This workshop, presented by Washington, D.C., based Partnership for Public Service, will be Tuesday, September 21, 9–10:30 a.m. In the next three years, the federal government will need to fill more than 100,000 entry-level positions with new college graduates. |School of Health Sciences Japanese Exchange|
The School of Health Sciences (SHS) hosted eight students and two professors from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, August 14-21. Activities included medical English classes and visits to area hospitals. From August 30 through September 2, SHS will host 12 students and their professors from Ishikawa University. The group will tour the SHS nursing skills lab and hear lectures from SHS faculty. |New Time for U.S. Postal Mail Pick Up|
From Copying and Mailing Services. “Please be advised that our U.S. postal driver is now picking up the mail at 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. |Plan Ahead: Stationery Orders in August,, September|
Vision Press, SPU stationery vendor, will be closed August 31-September 15. Because of this, stationery orders placed between August 24 (after 10 a.m.) and August 30 (before 10 a.m.) will be submitted on August 30 instead of August 31. Vision Press asks that all proofs be promptly faxed back to them on the afternoon of Monday, August 30. Those orders will be delivered September 15. |Holmes Makes Presentation at Symposium|
Professor of Music Education Ramona Holmes gave a presentation titled "Ethnomusicology and Music Education Around the World" on July 22 at the Ethnomusicology Symposium at University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. While in Tanzania, she also attended the Wagogo Music Festival in Chamwino village.
|Overstreet Leads Image Film Seminar, Writes About It|
At this summer's Glen Workshop (August 1-7), Image journal's arts conference held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at St. John's College, University Communications Specialist Jeffrey Overstreet led a weeklong film seminar for a group of 18 students. Jeffrey introduced six challenging, classic films, and then led discussions of each. Some participants said it was the best seminar they'd attended at the Glen Workshop. On Wednesday night, Jeffrey also gave an hour-long lecture to the whole conference, offering reflections on lessons learned from storybooks and movies from childhood to the present. This week, Image published Jeffrey's reflections on the film seminar experience at the Good Letters blog. At Good Letters, you can also read Jeffrey's recent reviews of Inception, The Secret of Kells, and a documentary on Andrei Tarkovsky. More
|Hanson Chosen as Principal Conductor for Northwest Mahler Festival|
Eric Hanson, professor of music, was chosen as principal conductor for the Northwest Mahler Festival for the 2010 season. On July 18, he conducted the culminating concert, which included Mahler's great Seventh Symphony, Strauss' “Death and Transfiguration," and a new piece composed for Mahler's 150th birthday. Eric also wrote the program notes for the festival. In June, he wrote the program notes for the Vermont Mahler Festival.
|Mvududu Gives Presentation|
At the 2010 Joint Statistical Meetings held July 31-August 5, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction Nyaradzo Mvududu presented a talk titled “Participants' Perspectives on a Collaborative Research Mentoring Program." He also presented a paper titled “Understanding p-values and Statistical Significance" with colleagues Jennifer Bergamo from Onondaga Community College; Ayesha Nneka Delpish from Elon University; and Georgette Nicolaides from Syracuse University. More
|Sandlin Presents at Fundraising Summit|
Marlon Sandlin, director of development-gift planning, was a presenter at the recent 2010 Seattle Fundraising Summit. His topic was "Planned Giving in the New Economy." This event, sponsored by the Center for Nonprofit Success and held at Seattle University, was a professional education conference for nonprofit leaders throughout the Puget Sound region.

|Davis Gives Primary Commentary|
Professor of Political Science Reed Davis was an invited political commentator on
several radio and TV shows to talk about Washington state's primary election. He appeared twice on KING-TV (Channel 5) community affairs program “UpFront With Robert Mak," once before the primary on August 15, and again after the primary on August 22. On August 16, he was interviewed for KOMO radio (AM 1000).
