Alumni of the Year Scott and Pam Nolte will be the guest speakers at Homecoming Chapel on Thursday, January 20, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. SPU offices will be closed so that staff and faculty can attend.
|SPU Theatre Presents Popular Musical “Godspell"|
SPU Theatre presents “Godspell," January 20-22, 27-29, 7:30 p.m. in the E.E Bach
Theatre inside McKinley Hall, with additional matinees at 2 p.m. January 22 and 29.
(Performances are sold out this week, but tickets are available for next week.)
Written by American playwright and director John-Michael Tebelak, the musical is a
modern-day version of the Gospel in Matthew. In 1974, SPU was the first theatre in
the Pacific Northwest to premiere "Godspell," which was directed by Professor
Emeritus James Chapman. This year's production is directed by Associate

|Thursday Food for Thought: Jeff Van Duzer|
Jeff Van Duzer, dean of the School of Business and Economics, speaks about his new book Why Business Matters to God (and What Still Needs to Be Fixed) at the first “Thursday Food of Thought" of Winter Quarter on Thursday, January 20, 12:30-1:15 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. He'll consider a “God's-eye view" of the purpose and practice of business, the role of profit, the idolatry of the market, and more. Bring a brown-bag lunch if you wish. |Free Homecoming Basketball Tickets|

The third annual Falcon 5K is Saturday, January 22, at 10 a.m. The 3.1-mile route begins near the crew house at the south end of Green Lake, and follows the main path clockwise around the lake. The cost is $15, and $5 for current SPU students. Kids under age 12 are free. T-shirts will be available for $5. Prizes will be awarded after the race. Proceeds will be split between the SPU cross country and track programs, and World Birth Aid, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, clean birth kits to pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. The organization was started by Yvonne Lerum, wife of Seattle Pacific head track coach Karl Lerum. More
|Palmer Lecture Series on January 27|
The 2011 Palmer Lecture Series sponsored by the School of Theology will be Thursday, January 27. Dr. J. Kameron Carter, associate professor in theology and black-church studies at Duke Divinity School, will be the guest lecturer. Dr. Carter will address issues of race, theology, and the church as he discusses "Post-Racial Religion: or, The Question of the Neighbor in the 21st Century." The SPU campus is invited and encouraged to attend two events on January 27; the Palmer Chapel at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church, and the Palmer Lecture at 7 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. The Center for Integrity in Business hosted Ted Malloch, chairman and CEO of The Roosevelt Group and the author of numerous books, including Spiritual Enterprise: Doing Virtuous Business. Following a sneak preview of Malloch's new PBS-produced documentary, “Doing Virtuous Business," an interactive Q&A session and panel discussion was held on the topic of virtuous business in the Pacific Northwest. |A Community Collaborative Martin Luther King Jr. Event|
The Perkins Center is partnering with several other organizations to bring professor and author Michelle Alexander to Seattle. The New Jim Crow, is Alexander's detailed and concise look into mass incarceration in America as legal segregation disproportionately targeting African-Americans. It's eye-opening and challenging to all who care deeply about justice. Reviewers have said, “her critique is informative and analysis brilliant." Alexander joined the Ohio State University faculty in 2005. She holds a joint appointment with the Moritz College of Law and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Prior to joining the OSU faculty, she was a member of the Stanford Law School faculty, where she served as director of the Civil Rights Clinic. There are two public events, including one on campus.

|SPAC Gallery: “Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer"|
The latest artwork by Kayo Nakamura, SPU adjunct art faculty member, is now on display at SPU's Art Center Gallery. The exhibit is titled “Don't Fall in Love With A Dreamer" and features 3-D art pieces and time-based media. The exhibit will run until February 11. Admission is free. The gallery is located at 3 West Cremona and is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday-Thursday. More

“Our sweet little dog is Day-Z (named after Jay-Z). We were told she is a boxer/lab mix, but we also think she might have some terrier in her, and maybe even vizsla and rhodesian ridgeback! She is the most patient dog in the world. She lets us dress her up (obviously!) and is really gentle with kids (and adults!) who like to tease her. She either has tons of energy and is running around like crazy, or she is sleeping. She's happiest when she's snuggled up next to someone — I always try to have one ‘girl night' a week where we snuggle on the couch and watch a movie." |Don Yanik Design and Technical Theatre Scholarship Endowment|
SPU is pleased to announce the establishment of the Don Yanik Design and Technical Theatre Scholarship Endowment. Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Ken Cornell worked with Theatre Department chair Don Yanik to establish this endowment. Don joined the theatre faculty in 1985. As a professor of theatre, he teaches courses in scene design and technical drawing, costume and period styles, scene painting, stage makeup, and theatre experience. Don has set design credits for more than 285 productions and 100 costume plot design credits, including eight world premiers, two U.S. premiers, and several Northwest premiers. Don has also designed productions for the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute in Cambridge, England. He is the restoration designer for the home of C.S. Lewis in Oxford, England, and serves as a board member of the Kilns Project. This endowment will provide scholarships with preference to, but not necessarily limited to, students studying as theatre majors with a technical and design emphasis as determined by theatre faculty in conjunction with the office responsible for financial aid administration.
|Erickson Presents Research|
Assistant Professor of Psychology Thane Erickson recently presented research at the annual conference of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. He presented a paper titled "Discrepant Perspectives on the Interpersonal Characteristics of Worriers Based on Self Versus Peer Assessment," and served as discussant for a symposium on emotional and physiological mechanisms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
|Thorpe's Essay to Be Published|
Professor of English Doug Thorpe has a forthcoming essay in Sojourners magazine titled “'The land is not able to bear his words': Israel/Palestine and the War over Living Waters." The essay draws on the time Doug spent co-leading a trip to the area with Earth Ministry, a Seattle based nonprofit focused on the connection between faith and the environment.
|Van Zanten's New Book|
A book by Professor of English Susan VanZanten titled Mending a Tattered Faith: Devotions With Emily Dickinson has been published by Cascade Books. Written for a general audience, the book helps readers unpack Dickinson's intense but brief poems, supplying historical background and personal stories in order to help readers to embark upon their own meditative journeys with Dickinson. It is available at the SPU Bookstore. Her entry on the South African writer Alan Paton has also just appeared in Vol. 3 of The Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century Fiction, published by Wiley-Blackwell. Susan will be reading from her book on February 3 at Thursday Food for Thought.
