|President's Spring Forum May 3|
The annual President's Spring Forum honoring faculty and staff is Tuesday, May 3, 9:30 a.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion, with a community reception immediately following. Offices will be closed during that time to encourage everyone to attend.
|Theatre Department Presents “Our Town"|
The SPU Theatre Department presents “Our Town," May 5-7, 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre inside McKinley Hall on SPU campus. A matinee will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Written by Thornton Wilder, “Our Town" explores the lives of people living in a small, classic American town. The play is divided into three acts of the human experience of life, love, and loss. Wilder received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1938 for this play. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors, and $12 general admission. Group rates are available for 20 or more. |Thursday Food for Thought: Nienhuis and Wall|
Bring a brown-bag lunch and join “Thursday Food for Thought" in the reading room at the SPU library. Enjoy lunch with SPU faculty and staff authors as they discuss their latest books on Thursdays, April 14-May 19, 12:30-1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time follows, and copies will be available for purchase. |Autumn Registration Approaching|
Registration for Autumn 2011 Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time in order to remove the "Faculty Advisor Hold." Autumn registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, May 16. Autumn registration for graduate students begins Monday, May 23. |Looking for Outstanding Graduates|
University Communications needs help identifying outstanding students from this year's graduating class. This request is for undergraduate and graduate students. These students and their achievements will be pitched to media outlets prior to Commencement. Please send the name(s) of the students and a short description about why you are recommending them. Examples would be students who overcame obstacles to graduate, are involved in community service projects, participated in innovative research, started a new venture, took a class that changed their career direction, or did something really interesting. Basically, anything that would make a good story! We will follow up with the student and get permission to use his or her profile. |Sam Phillips to Receive Levertov Award|
Critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sam Phillips is coming to Seattle to receive the 2011 Denise Levertov Award from Image journal on Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at 415 Westlake in South Lake Union. |Campus Preview May 12-13|
Do you have a junior or sophomore high school student at home interested in potentially attending SPU? Campus Preview, May 12-13, will be a great chance for them to kick-start their college search. This overnight event will give them the opportunity to sleep in the residence halls, attend numerous classes, experience campus life ( plus an evening concert), meet professors and current students, discover more about our majors and extracurricular programs, and more. |Documentary: Race to Nowhere|
SPU's honorary society Sigma Phi Upsilon will host a showing of the documentary Race to Nowhere on Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The documentary explores the impact of the "high-stakes, high-pressure culture" in schools. A reviewer writes, "This remarkable new film shines a light on the price young people pay for this ‘race to nowhere.' High-stakes testing has replaced meaningful teaching and learning. Cheating is commonplace. Stress-related illness, depression, and burnout are rampant. Many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired." Sigma Phi Upsilon is a chapter of Chi Sigma, an international honor society that values academic and professional excellence in counseling. Its mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership, advocacy, and excellence in counseling. Tickets should be bought online at racetonowhere.com. |Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference May 13|
The ninth annual Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference will be held Friday, May 13, 3–9 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall. Join us for oral presentations and posters from our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students, a keynote address from Tom Lyster, inventor of the AED (automated external defibrillator), a door prize drawing, and some dessert. |WebMD: Don't Pass Up Your $75 Reward!|
May 15 will be the final day to complete the WebMD Personal Health Assessment - HealthQuotient to receive a reward of $75. You must be Premera-covered in order to access the HealthQuotient. The more specific your answers, the more accurate your wellness score. Encourage your Premera-covered spouse to complete the assessment as well. |Online Open Enrollment: Important Dates and Information|
You will be receiving your open enrollment packet through campus mail by May 2. Open enrollment runs May 1–31 this year. Once again, your benefit selections will be made through an online system. Instructions for access are in your open enrollment packet or available on the Human Resources website. The Benefits Fair is Tuesday, May 10. Think you might need help completing online open enrollment? Human Resources is busy with final details, preparing for our annual Benefits Fair on Tuesday, May 10, 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. Spouses are welcome to attend. We will have representatives from our benefits vendors available to provide all the information you need. We hope you will stop by with questions, enjoy snacks, visit with friends, and fill a bag with lots of vendor giveaways! More than one billion people around the world need eyeglasses but can't afford them. A gift of donated eyeglasses can change the lives of those in need. Seeing clearly for the first time means they can do basic things like succeed at school or work, and care for their families. Eyes of Hope℠, VSP® Vision Care's eyewear donation program, is an easy way you can help. Helping others see well is easy.
• First, find those unused glasses and dust them off. VSP needs complete sets of eyewear. Any of the following would be great:
o Prescription glasses
o Plastic and metal frames are both accepted
o Cases can be used if they are donated with the glasses inside
• Second, consider asking around. You might have friends or family who have been looking for an opportunity to donate as well.
• Third, mark your calendar to drop off your glasses at the Benefits Fair on May 10.

On May 10, the SPU community is invited to attend most of the events of the one-day Center for Biblical and Theological Education conference, “Embracing the (W)hole Gospel: Putting Faith Into Action." The conference features Richard Stearns and Steve Haas of World Vision. These free events include chapel (9:30–10:20 a.m.), breakout sessions (1:45–2:45 p.m. and 3–4 p.m.), a panel/roundtable discussion (4:15–5:30 p.m.), and the plenary lecture (7–8:30 p.m.). |Karns Presents at Conference|
Gary Karns, professor of marketing, wrote a paper titled "Designing the Marketing Component of an Integrated Problem-Based M.A. in Social and Sustainable Management" and co-authored "A Study of Adoption of Electronic Textbooks in Marketing Classes" with colleagues at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. Both articles were presented at the Marketing Educators' Association Conference in San Diego, April 21-23.
|Yost, Students Present at Conference|
Paul Yost, professor of I/O psychology, presented three papers at the Society of Industial/Organizational Psychology's annual conference. Presentations included "Leadership Lessons of Experience," "HR Interventions That Go Viral," and "Making On-the-job Development a Foundational Pillar in an Organization's Talent Management System." Doctoral students Jillian McLellan, Chris Roenicke, and Glenna Chang co-presented and co-authored two of the papers.
