Chapel: “Being Christian Community"

On Tuesday, May 24, Celestin Musekura, president and founder of the African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries, will speak in chapel at 9:30 a.m., in First Free Methodist Church. He will be joined by SPU's Wind Symphony, Worship Arts Ensemble, and the Gospel Choir who will perform excerpts from “Reconciled." The service will focus on Romans 14:1-15:13.




Prize Winners from the Benefits Fair

The staff of Human Resources would like to thank everyone who attended the recent Benefits Fair. Now at the Art Center Gallery: Annual “Senior Studio" Shows

The latest artwork by SPU students is now on display at SPU's Art Center Gallery. The annual “Senior Studio" shows feature oil paintings, illustrations, photographs, mobile sculptures, and interactive installations. The students, all seniors, are majoring in illustrations/new pictures and studio art. Admission is free, and the gallery is wheelchair accessible. The Art Center Gallery is located at 3 West Cremona, close to campus. The gallery is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. To contact the Art Center Gallery, call 206-281-2079. More




Forum on Haiti May 24

"We're Still Here," a student-led forum to raise awareness about the current need in Haiti, will be held Tuesday, May 24, 7–8 p.m. in Demaray Hall 258. SPU students, staff, and alumni will talk about their recent trips to Haiti. Before the forum, students will organize a fundraiser called "Pennies for Pure Water." Water bottles will be placed around campus (specifically in the residence halls) to collect spare change. The donations will go toward the construction of a water filtration system in Haiti. “Last Lecture" by Ben McFarland

Seattle Pacific University's Ivy Honorary presents “The Last Lecture of Dr. Ben McFarland" on Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall, room 109. McFarland, associate professor of biochemistry, will speak on “The Sounds of New Creation." Light dessert will be provided. Students, faculty, staff, and the general public are welcome to attend. The concept of a “Last Lecture" is based on a 2007 lecture and 2008 book by Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer science professor who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in July 2008. In subsequent Last Lectures, professors reflect on what matters most and what wisdom they would hope to share with others. Ivy Honorary is SPU's chapter of the National Mortar Board Honor Society.




Wind Symphony Performs at Memorial Day Service

SPU's Wind Symphony will perform during the annual service at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park on Memorial Day, May 30, beginning at 1:30 p.m. More




Percussion Ensemble Concert May 31

SPU's Percussion Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, in the E.E. Bach Theater inside SPU's McKinley Hall. The event is free and wheelchair accessible.

The new SPU Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, in First Free Methodist Church. The event is free and wheelchair accessible.

Hire a SPRINT Team for Your Spring Cleaning Project

This summer, SPRINT will send 11 teams to learn and serve in 10 countries around the world. You can support the teams' fundraising efforts by hiring a team to help with landscaping, housecleaning, or other work projects around your house. We suggest a donation of $10 per hour per student. Funds go directly to students' trip accounts. Projects can be scheduled any time before graduation. Fall Reservation Requests for Camp Casey

Full-time faculty and staff are now able to make fall reservation requests for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are September 26, 2011, through January 1, 2012. Reservation requests are due by June 5, 2011. The fall requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. If you have questions, contact the Camp Casey office at 866-661-6604 or campcasey@spu.edu. Eastside Van Pool?

Tired of rising gas prices and thinking about the toll that will soon be assessed to cross the 520 bridge? Now is the perfect time to consider saving money and joining a vanpool! Currently there are not any vanpools between the Eastside and campus, but we are looking into the possibility of starting one. At this point, we are thinking of meeting at the South Kirkland Park and Ride, but based on response may consider meeting at the Bear Creek Park and Ride in Redmond with a stop at the South Kirkland Park and Ride. Our work hours are 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you are interested in joining, email Heidi Lin in Student Financial Services at hlin@spu.edu. In your email, please indicate if you are interested in being a driver, bookkeeper, or rider, and which of these park and rides would work better for you. If there is enough interest, we will look at what the next steps are for trying to get this started.




Theatre Department Presents The Fantasticks

The SPU Theatre Department presents The Fantasticks, May 24–27, at 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre inside McKinley Hall. There is also a matinee performance on Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m. The play starts off with neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love with each other by staging a feud and placing a wall between their houses. One of the fathers hires an actor to fake Luisa's abduction so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa. Once Luisa and Matt realize their fathers' intentions, they both reject their love match and go off to explore.

The play is directed by SPU theatre alumni Candace and Sam Vance. Candace is also an adjunct theatre faculty member at SPU. Tickets are $6. Group rates are available for 20 or more. Last Call for Outstanding Graduates

University Communications needs help identifying outstanding students from this year's graduating class. This request is for undergraduate and graduate students. These students and their achievements will be pitched to media outlets prior to Commencement. Please send the name(s) of the students and a short description about why you are recommending them. Examples would be students who overcame obstacles to graduate, were involved in community service projects, participated in innovative research, started a new venture, took a class that changed their career direction, or did something really interesting. Basically, anything that would make a good story! We will follow up with the student and get permission to use his or her profile. VanZanten's Second Article Published

A second article by Professor of English Susan VanZanten appeared in the web publication Inside Higher Education on May 16. Titled "Religious College Interviews," the article advises faculty job candidates about the kinds of questions they might face when interviewing at a religious college. Susan's first Inside Higher Education piece was called "The Religious Option." Read the latest article online. More




Doctoral Student Wins “Outstanding Dissertation" Award

The Washington Educational Research Association (WERA) has awarded doctoral student David Denton the “Outstanding Dissertation for 2010." Professor of Education Art Ellis was committee chairperson for the dissertation. The purpose of the award is to recognize exemplary research by doctoral students related to improving K-12 education. The title of his dissertation is “The Effects of Reflective Thinking on Middle School Students' Academic Achievement and Perceptions of Related Instructional Practices: A Mixed Methods Study." David and Art will receive the award and present the results of the dissertation at the WERA State Assessment conference in December.




SPFC Faculty, Students Attend Western Psychological Association

The School of Psychology, Family, and Community (SPFC) was well represented at the annual meeting of the Western Psychological Association, April 28–May 1, in Los Angeles. Seven faculty members along with 17 doctoral students in clinical psychology, 11 undergraduate students in psychology, one doctoral student in industrial/organizational psychology, and three SPFC alumni were represented in 16 papers, symposia, and poster presentations.

Professor of Clinical Psychology Jay Skidmore and student co-authors presented two posters titled “Psychosocial effects in sedentary behavior in kids: Systematic review," and “Cognitive appraisal and coping in cancer patients."

Assistant Professor of Psychology Baine Craft and students presented posters titled “Food deprivation causes contrast effects in rattus norvegicus," and “Reward quality causes difference in self-controlled choice bias in rattus norvegicus."

Associate Professor of Psychology Margaret Brown and student co-authors presented the poster “Priming generosity reduces social dominance attitudes and behavior."

Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology Amy Mezulis and doctoral students co-presented their poster “Brooding and cognitive style: Mediating temperament and depression in college students."

Doctoral advisees of Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Marcia Webb presented the poster “Doubt resolution and religious maturity."

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Lynette Bikos and students presented the pair of posters “Globetrekking: Quantitative results 9 months post-re-entry," and “Student perspectives on their learning experiences overseas: Difficulties, triumphs, and lack of re-entry support." Lynette also chaired a symposium titled “International immersion learning experiences in higher education: Program outcomes and recommendations." In that session, her students gave a presentation titled “Advocacy for international immersion learning experiences in doctoral psychology curricula." Also, Lynette and students presented the poster “Evaluation of a career development intervention for youth in residential treatment."

Professor of Psychology Kathy Lustyk and co-authors participated in a paper session in health psychology titled “Sleep and menstrual cycle effects on hemodynamic reactivity in women."

Doctoral advisees of Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology John Thoburn presented the posters “Commitment, relationship experience, and mate preferences of women," and “A systems approach to reconciliation and recovery for clergy sexual misconduct."

Doctoral students of Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Marcia Webb presented the posters “Religiosity and recovery from severe mental illness," and “Suffering with God, anger style, and post-traumatic growth: Loved ones response to brain injury."

Behind the scenes, SPU faculty members were involved in the conference administration. Kathy Lustyk continues to serve on the Council of Representatives. Lynette Bikos was the program chair for international presentations.
